Verses on the Middle and Extremes This is a foundational treatise of the Indian Mahāyāna Yogācāra school, traditionally taught by Bodhisattva Maitreya and translated by the eminent Tang dynasty monk Master Xuanzang. Composed in verse, it elucidates the Middle Way, refutes extreme views, and systematically expounds core Yogācāra doctrines such as the three natures, eight consciousnesses, and stages of practice. It deeply analyzes the relationship between emptiness and existence, emphasizing the transcendence of extremes to abide in the Middle. As a concise and essential work of the Yogācāra theoretical system, it holds a lofty position in Buddhist history and has profoundly influenced the development of thought in both Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism, serving as a vital text for the study of Yogācāra and Madhyamaka philosophy.

Verses on the Distinction Between the Middle and the Extremes

依識有所得, 境無所得生;
此若無雜染, 一切應自脫;
