The Later Collection from the Forest, compiled by the eminent Song dynasty monk Huihong, is an important Chan (Zen) Buddhist work in the note-style genre. Completed in the late Northern Song period, the text records dialogues, koans, and insights on Chan practice from Huihong’s interactions with great masters during his forest retreats. Its content spans Chan philosophy, practical cultivation, and anecdotes of past patriarchs. Written with concise yet profound language and infused with the spirit of the Linji school, the work exerted a deep influence on the spread of Chan Buddhism in the Song dynasty and the development of later Chan thought. It remains a key text for the study of Song Chan history and philosophy and holds a significant place in Buddhist literature.
