> Master Yihuai of Tianyi Monastery in Yuezhou<note>Dharma successor of Master Xuedou Xian</note>

> The Master's family had been fishermen for generations. His mother dreamed of a star falling onto the roof, and soon after, she became pregnant. As a child, he would sit at the stern of the boat, and whenever he caught a fish, he would release it. His father scolded and beat him, but he paid no attention. When he grew up, he traveled to the capital and became a monk at Jingde Temple, shaving his head and taking the precepts. He then visited Master Jinluan Shan but found no connection. He also visited Master Yexian Sheng but again found no connection. Traveling east, he arrived at Cuifeng and visited Master Mingjue. Mingjue asked, "What is your name?" He replied, "Yihuai." Mingjue said, "Why not call yourself Huai?" Yihuai said, "That's how it was given." Mingjue asked, "Who gave you this name?" He replied, "I took the precepts ten years ago." Mingjue said, "How many straw sandals have you worn out on your travels?" Yihuai said, "Master, don't mislead people." Mingjue said, "I've accumulated countless faults—what will you do about it?" The Master was silent. Mingjue struck him and said, "You empty-talking fellow, get out." Later, he was assigned the duty of water carrier. One day, while drawing water, the pole broke, and suddenly he awakened. He composed a verse of insight: "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven—standing alone on a peak ten thousand fathoms high, seizing the bright pearl from under the black dragon's chin, one word exposes the truth of Vimalakirti." When Mingjue heard this, he tapped the table and praised him.

> The Master once practiced Pure Land Buddhism and diligently encouraged others to do the same. In his room, he asked his students: "If we speak of abandoning the impure and seeking the pure, rejecting this and longing for that, then this is a mindset of discrimination—the delusion of sentient beings. But if we say there is no Pure Land, then we contradict the Buddha's words. So how should a practitioner of Pure Land Buddhism cultivate?" The assembly was silent. He then answered himself: "One is certainly born \[in the Pure Land\], yet in reality, one does not go anywhere." He also said: "Like a wild goose crossing the vast sky, its shadow sinks into the cold water. The goose leaves no trace of its passage, and the water holds no lingering image of the shadow."
