The Illustrated Guide to the Six Monastic Articles: Correcting Errors, composed by the Song Dynasty monk Miaosheng, is a Vinaya text that examines the six essential items a Buddhist monk should carry. This work emerged during the flourishing of Vinaya studies in the Song Dynasty, aiming to clarify historical misunderstandings regarding the form, function, and proper observance of the six articles: the three robes, alms bowl, sitting mat, and water filter. Its purpose is to trace these practices back to their authentic origins. Through detailed illustrations and text, the book meticulously investigates the original standards and historical evolution of these items, offering significant value for both scholarly research and practical cultivation. This text serves as an important document for studying the Vinaya traditions and daily monastic disciplines in Chinese Buddhism. It has profoundly influenced later Vinaya scholarship and the correct observance of precepts, holding a key position within the canonical literature of the Buddhist Vinaya school.

The regulations concerning the three robes and six possessions originate from the Buddha’s own heart, and their merit is truly immeasurable. Because of this, disciples of the Buddha must not, even for a moment, forget these regulations. However, in our current age, there are those who do not follow the teachings, and I have long wished to correct this, though I have not yet been able to do so. Recently, the Vinaya Master Dongzang produced a chart of the six possessions, intending to rectify these abuses. (I) was very pleased when I first heard of it, so I requested a copy to study. Unfortunately, the text and its meanings contained many omissions and errors, which left me uneasy. I have therefore set out to clarify the points in the text and charts that were problematic, while also incorporating my own observations to correct the inaccuracies. My intention is simply to preserve the truth; it is not that I enjoy changing the words of others. I only fear that if these explanations circulate in the world, those who place their trust in them will stop reading the original commentaries and texts, leading to errors being passed down and compounded over time, until they can no longer be corrected. How could I remain silent while these errors are still in their infancy? I hope to shed light on these charts and texts with my own humble views; if they are indeed found to be correct, then who in the world could deny them? I have now briefly divided my critique into eleven sections. These are not arranged in any particular order, as I have simply addressed issues as I encountered them in the charts and text. There are several other points I have omitted to avoid excessive length.
