> Minister of Works Li Ao, whose courtesy name was Xizhi, once governed Langzhou. Admiring the way of Master Yaoshan, he went into the mountains to pay his respects. Yaoshan was reciting scriptures and took no notice of him. Li said, "Seeing you in person is not as good as hearing of your fame." Yaoshan called out, "Prefect!" Li responded. Yaoshan said, "How can you value your ears over your eyes?" Li apologized and asked, "What is the Way?" Yaoshan pointed up and down with his hand and asked, "Do you understand?" Li said he did not. Yaoshan said, "Clouds are in the blue sky; water is in the bottle." Li was delighted and answered with a verse: "Refining the body to take on the form of a crane, beneath a thousand pines two cases of sutras. I came to ask of the Way—no further words: clouds in the blue sky, water in the bottle." He then asked, "What are precepts, concentration, and wisdom?" Yaoshan said, "There are no such idle furnishings here." Li took his leave. One night, Yaoshan climbed the mountain. Suddenly the clouds parted to reveal the moon, and he let out a great laugh. The sound carried over Liyang for eighty or ninety li. When Li Ao heard of it, he sent another verse: "Choosing a secluded dwelling to match rustic tastes, year round no seeing off, no welcoming. Sometimes I climb straight to the lonely peak's top, beneath the moon parting clouds with a single laugh." Li Ao once wrote three chapters on the "Recovery of Nature." In the first, he said that when emotions obscure, nature hides; when emotions are forgotten, nature recovers. Sincerity brings clarity, and clarity fulfills the way of fully realizing one's nature. In the second, he said that without thought, there is stillness and illumination, and the extension of knowledge lies in the investigation of things. In the third, he said that being clouded and not thinking never reveals the Way. <note>Collected Works</note>

> Pei Su, also known as Zhongming, served as the Military Governor of Yuezhou. He rebuilt the Great Buddha Hall of Longxing Temple, fulfilling a prophecy made three hundred years earlier. Previously, the monk Tanyan of Yuezhou, together with Xu Xun (styled Yuandu), had jointly built two pagodas. But before the pagodas were completed, Xu Xun passed away. Master Tanyan lived to the remarkable age of one hundred twenty, still waiting for Xu Xun's reincarnation to arrive. Xu Xun was reborn as Xiao Cha, the King of Yueyang, who later came to govern Yuezhou. Upon arriving at the prefecture, he visited the temple and met Tanyan. Through his meditative powers, Tanyan caused the king to suddenly recall his past life and the work on the pagodas. Thus the two pagodas were further enhanced and made even more magnificent. At that time, the Great Hall of Longxing Temple had fallen into disrepair. The monks requested that it be rebuilt, but Tanyan said, "This is not something my humble efforts can accomplish. Three hundred years from now, a patron in crimson robes will come to restore this hall." The monks inscribed this prophecy on stone. When Governor Pei arrived to take up his post, he donated his salary to repair the hall, exactly fulfilling Master Tanyan's prediction. Pei Su was the father of Pei Xiu. <note>From the Transmission of the Lamp</note> In the twelfth month, the Emperor passed away, and Emperor Wen ascended the throne.
