> Volume 6: Five Kinds of Wrong Livelihood

> Using these five improper methods to seek material gain and sustain oneself is something a monk must strictly avoid.

> One who deceitfully displays extraordinary appearances: This refers to bhikkhus who, in front of ordinary people, violate the Buddha's true teachings by pretending to manifest unusual and extraordinary signs, causing others to feel reverence and admiration, all for the sake of seeking offerings. This is considered wrong livelihood.

> Second, boasting about one's own abilities. This refers to when monks, using eloquent and sharp words, belittle others while praising themselves, boasting about their own capabilities. They do this to make those who see them feel faith and reverence, thereby seeking offerings. This is wrong livelihood.

> Three Methods of Divination to Predict Fortune or Misfortune Some monks study various unorthodox arts, practicing divination, fortune-telling, and physiognomy. They discuss good and bad omens in order to seek offerings. This is considered wrong livelihood.

> Four kinds of loud and imposing displays: The bhikkhus speak loudly and at a high volume, feigning dignified deportment to make people fear and revere them, thereby seeking offerings and support. This is wrong livelihood.

> Gaining offerings through praise: If a monk receives offerings at one place, he speaks of them with praise in another; or when receiving offerings elsewhere, he speaks of them with praise here. This causes people's hearts to be stirred in pursuit of offerings. This is called wrong livelihood, a wasting sickness.

> This condition is a wasting disease, also known as an emaciation illness, where the body becomes thin and withered. According to the \*Monastic Code\*, it is called a "consumption disease." Within the body, there is a type of worm called the "grease-gnawer," which dwells in the fat channels. When one eats too much or sleeps too much, this worm becomes agitated and stops digesting food. This disruption becomes the root cause of many illnesses, leading to this wasting ailment.

音除。 貿

> \[The source text appears to be a fragmented list of Chinese characters with definitions, not a coherent Buddhist scripture. It reads as a dictionary entry or vocabulary list: "Sound remove. Store. Accumulate. Trade."\] Without breaking it into meaningful sentences related to Buddhist scripture, a translation would be: "Remove sound. Store. Accumulate. Trade."

> A serene voice said: "Profit comes from the exchange of goods. Beware of arrogance."
