The Vimalakīrti Sūtra Commentary and Notes is a commentary by Zhanran, the ninth patriarch of the Tiantai school in the Tang dynasty, on the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra translated by Kumārajīva. Completed during the mid-Tang period, this work aims to elucidate the Mahāyāna Buddhist doctrine of nonduality and the practice of lay Buddhist cultivation. Centering on the perfect teaching of Tiantai, Zhanran systematically explicates the sutra, with particular emphasis on profound meanings such as "purifying the mind purifies the land" and "afflictions themselves are bodhi." He also integrates and critiques the views of contemporary schools such as Yogācāra and Huayan. This commentary stands as an authoritative Tiantai interpretation of the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, exerting a profound influence on the development of later Buddhist doctrinal studies and serving as an essential text for the study of Chinese Buddhist intellectual history.
