### 初會法付囑品第一

> Chapter 1: The First Assembly and Entrusting the Dharma

如是我聞：一時，佛在王舍城靈鷲山中，與大比丘眾百億萬人，釋帝桓因、四大天王、自在天子、世主梵天王、尸棄大□□大龍王、緊□羅□□婆阿脩羅、迦樓□羅□樹神、宮神、竈□神、火神、風神、水神、土神、天神、□□虗空神，一切邪神、一切閑神、野鬼神等，魘𥧌呪咀疾疫神，日月天子、星宿天子、六欲天□色□天子、四空處天子、三十三□□淨居天子，凡有識類悉皆□會。地獄鬼畜若干異類等，十六大國王、無量小國王、諸轉輪聖王等，此土他土菩薩摩訶薩，遭圍遶默□而坐。肉髻光明普照諸佛土，□□諸佛光明來入于佛口，大眾見是瑞而為希有，復□頭□瞻視□□□□槃。爾時，世尊告大眾言：我今日背痛，涅槃日近。即起座舉足，趣拘尸那大城。無量大眾、無量異類、無量菩薩、無量諸天、無量轉輪聖王等，同一驚戀，圍遶前後，到於佛所，皆坐一面。

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Vulture Peak in the city of Rājagṛha, accompanied by a great assembly of bhikṣus numbering hundreds of millions, along with Śakra Devānām Indra, the Four Heavenly Kings, the Lord of the Desire Realm, the Great Brahmā King of the World, Śikhin and other great dragon kings, kinnaras, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, tree spirits, palace spirits, hearth spirits, fire spirits, wind spirits, water spirits, earth spirits, celestial spirits, spirits of empty space, all malevolent spirits, all idle spirits, wild ghosts and deities, spirits of nightmares, curses, and epidemics, the sun and moon devas, the star devas, devas of the six desire heavens and the form heavens, devas of the four formless realms, the thirty-three devas, and the devas of the pure abodes—all sentient beings of every kind gathered together. Beings from the hells, ghosts, animals, and various other realms, kings of the sixteen great countries, countless minor kings, and the wheel-turning sage kings, as well as bodhisattva mahāsattvas from this world and others, surrounded him in silent reverence and sat down. The light from his uṣṇīṣa radiated throughout all buddha-lands, and the light of all buddhas entered his mouth. The great assembly, witnessing this auspicious sign, regarded it as exceedingly rare, and once again bowed their heads, gazing intently toward nirvāṇa. Then the World-Honored One addressed the great assembly, saying: "Today, my back aches. The day of my nirvāṇa draws near." He then rose from his seat, lifted his feet, and set out toward the great city of Kuśinagara. Innumerable beings of the great assembly, countless beings of different realms, countless bodhisattvas, countless devas, and countless wheel-turning sage kings, all struck with the same shock and attachment, surrounded him front and back, arriving at the Buddha's location, and sat down on one side.

爾時，世尊四視而言：我今日涅槃時到，汝等有所疑者，一一可問，勿遲滯。

> At that moment, the World-Honored One looked around and said, "The time for my nirvana has come. If you have any doubts, ask them one by one. Do not delay."

爾□大梵天王即引若干眷屬，來奉獻世尊於□□羅華，各各頂禮佛足，退坐一面。

> Then the Great Brahma King, along with his many attendants, came to offer the World-Honored One a lotus flower. Each of them bowed at the Buddha's feet, then withdrew and sat to one side.

爾時世尊即拈奉獻□色婆羅華，瞬目揚眉，示諸大眾。是時大眾默然毋措。□□有迦葉□□破顏微笑。世尊言：有我正法眼藏，涅槃妙心，即付囑于汝。汝能護持，相續不斷。時迦葉奉佛勅，頂禮佛足退。

> At that moment, the World-Honored One picked up a golden-colored lotus flower that had been offered, blinked his eyes, and raised his eyebrows, showing it to the great assembly. At that time, the entire assembly remained silent and did not know how to respond. Only Mahākāśyapa broke into a gentle smile. The World-Honored One said: "I now entrust to you the true Dharma eye treasury, the wondrous mind of Nirvāṇa. You must protect and uphold it, ensuring it is passed on without interruption." Then Mahākāśyapa, in accordance with the Buddha's instruction, bowed at the Buddha's feet and withdrew.
