> Chapter 2: Brahma King's Resolution of Doubts

> At that time, the Great Brahma King rose, joined his palms, and addressed the Buddha: "World-Honored One, how exceedingly rare! World-Honored One, how exceedingly rare! In fifty years, such a thing has never been seen. World-Honored One, I have doubts in my mind, and those in the assembly feel the same. We earnestly beseech you, for our sake and for all gathered here, as well as for seekers of the Dharma in future ages, to resolve these doubts in our hearts, and to compassionately dispel the confusion that clouds our understanding. World-Honored One, you have previously taught the true nature of all phenomena, and all have been assured of attaining Buddhahood—could there be any omission? World-Honored One, you are fully endowed with the three mysteries, the four kinds of eloquence, and the eightfold voice; your teaching is complete and perfect, leaving nothing unsaid, and nothing unheard that is not realized. Yet now, World-Honored One, you hold up a flower and show it to the assembly, and the Venerable One immediately entrusts it with these words: World-Honored One, I and those in the assembly do not understand its meaning. We earnestly beseech you, for our sake and all gathered here, to resolve this doubt in our hearts."

> Then, the Buddha said: Excellent! Brahma King! For you to ask such a question here in this assembly, and for the sake of the future age, is truly profound. Listen closely! Listen closely! I will now resolve for you all... to understand... to dispel doubts... swiftly and completely. Then, the Great Brahma Heavenly King said: So be it, World-Honored One! World-Honored One! We are eager to listen.

> At that time, the Buddha addressed the Brahma King, saying: "All Buddhas appear in the world for one great purpose, which is also for the sake of all beings. All Buddhas are equal and do not speak falsely. All Buddhas skillfully adapt their teachings according to the capacities of beings. The wisdom of all Buddhas is profound and difficult to fathom. All Buddhas adorn the Dharma-body with the three secrets, which ultimately cannot be fully understood. You ask about the earlier explanation of the true reality and the prediction of Buddhahood, yet now I simply hold up a flower to show the assembly. Thus, all Buddhas sincerely reveal this—do not doubt the prediction of Buddhahood. This is the way all Buddhas manifest in the world. Is it not so? This is the great matter entrusted by the secret intention of all Buddhas. The secret intention of all Buddhas cannot be measured by words. Why? This Dharma cannot be understood through conceptual thinking—only Buddhas fully comprehend it. You should know that words are merely expedient means suited to each occasion. What is not suited to expedient means cannot be expressed in words; thus, there is such a matter. You should know that this Dharma is not attained by oneself alone, nor by another alone. Yet, without separating from self and other, beings realize it directly. All Buddhas are also like this. Now, I entrust this Dharma to Mahākāśyapa because Mahākāśyapa attained Buddhahood in the distant past and manifests as a śrāvaka to assist the Buddhas' teachings. Therefore, before the Many-Children Stūpa, I share half my seat and invite him to sit. Just as I now entrust this, so did the Buddhas of the past, and so will the Buddhas of the future."
