> Record of the Illusory Dwelling Hermitage in Pingjiang

> When the mind is originally pure and perfect, how could mountains, rivers, and the great earth suddenly arise? The \*Śūraṅgama Sūtra\* contains this question. In the past, a monk asked Langya this same question, and Langya responded by turning the question back on him. The monk was instantly enlightened to its profound meaning. People only know that mountains, rivers, and the great earth are illusory, but they do not realize that the pure and perfect original nature itself is also illusory. The mirror's light is inherently clear, yet images arise without any fixed form; water is originally pure, yet the moon's reflection appears unbidden. The bright images before us are the phantom traces that appear; the clear water and mirror are the phantom substance that can manifest them. When phantom and phantom both dissolve, and awareness and awareness both become empty—this is why that monk attained ultimate awakening. In the year Gengzi of the Dade era, I traveled through the Wu region. A townsman named Magistrate Lu Derun donated several acres of pine-covered hills west of Changmen. The place was called Yandang, and there I built a simple hut to dwell in. Zen practitioners gradually gathered until there were nearly five hundred, and I watched the seasons turn three times. The venerable master Juedi (Yongzhong) managed the affairs of the hermitage. One day, when everyone had assembled, they asked me to name the hermitage. I said to the assembly: "More than two thousand years ago, the great enlightened World-Honored One renounced his royal throne and lay in the deep snow. At night he saw the bright morning star, and together with countless sentient beings, he entered simultaneously into the samādhi of illusory transformation. Alas! Sentient beings to this day remain drunk in emotional attachments and delusions without realizing it. Although we have left home and dwell in reliance on this samādhi of illusory transformation, there is still something we have not awakened to. Would it be fitting to name this place 'Illusory Dwelling'?" At that moment someone rose from his seat and said: "According to the scriptures, when the illusory body ceases, the illusory mind also ceases. When the illusory mind ceases, the illusory objects also cease. When illusory objects cease, the very illusion of cessation also ceases. When the illusion of cessation ceases, the non-illusory does not cease. Does this non-ceasing—is it dwelling or not dwelling?" I replied: "If you try to use discriminating consciousness to determine whether illusory phenomena dwell or do not dwell, are you not merely adding more illusory views? How could there be any principle of awakening in that? Simply hold these wordless truths within your storehouse of consciousness to investigate your mind; carry your alms bowl to the gates of benefactors to sustain your life righteously; shoulder the responsibility of Baizhang's 'a day without work is a day without food' to devote yourself to service; and uphold the ancestral masters' sincere practice of letting all thoughts melt into ice to strengthen your resolve. Then one day, when subject and object suddenly vanish and effort and function are both forgotten, you will open up boundlessly and awaken beyond all grasping—whether this is dwelling or not dwelling will not require you to borrow a hand from someone who has no arms." Eighteen years later, in the year Dingsi, I happened to meet him again on a boat on the Wusong River. As we leisurely recalled old times, he earnestly asked me to write this record of the Illusory Dwelling Hermitage, hoping it might be passed down through the ages. And so I have written this.
