*Abhidharma Vijñānakāyapāda Śāstra* Composed by the Indian master Devaśarman Translated into Chinese by the Tang Dynasty Master Translator Xuanzang This treatise is an important scholastic work of the Sarvāstivāda school within Sectarian Buddhism. Taking consciousness as its foundational standpoint, the text systematically investigates the composition and functions of the mind, elucidating topics such as the six consciousnesses, the basis of consciousness, and the objects of consciousness. Through refuting the heterodox views of schools such as the Vātsīputrīya, it establishes the Sarvāstivādin doctrine of the real existence of the three time periods. In the history of Buddhist thought, it inherits the legacy of the Abhidharma and paves the way for the *Abhidharmakośa*, providing a theoretical foundation for the Dharma-characteristics and Consciousness-only schools. It holds significant value for understanding the consciousness theory of Sectarian Buddhism and the origins of the Consciousness-only tradition, and is regarded as one of the

初歸禮讚頌

Praise for Taking Refuge

I bow to the Great Awakened One, the King of Awakening, The World-Honored One who is revered as the sun of the three realms, The wondrous Dharma of liberation, the refuge of wisdom, The holy assembly upon whom the wise rely.

The ocean of Abhidharma is difficult to cross, A stream flowing from the Buddha's mouth, drunk upon by a thousand sages, Skillfully discerning the vast ocean of objects, Therefore I now sincerely bow my head.

If the bright sun does not rise to shine upon the world, Who can dispel the dense forest's gloom? Without the Abhidharma treatises, Who can annihilate the darkness of what is to be known by wisdom?

The Abhidharma is the true lamp of the Dharma, The pure eye within the mind, the root of wisdom, The sun over the forest of the knowable, the sword against false views, The power of the Bodhisattva, the Tathāgata-garbha.

It is the path of the eye of wisdom illuminating the three realms, The lamp for all dharmas, the ocean of the Buddha's words, Able to give rise to supreme wisdom and shatter all doubts, The highway of the Dharma for all sages and worthies.

It is the great reservoir of the wise one's waters of wisdom, The supreme foundation for the courageous and sharp seeker of wisdom, To understand this supreme Dharma is to reach utmost intelligence, To awaken to this holy teaching is to be a true child of the Buddha.
