> Master Kuiji, whose monastic name was given by his teacher, was a nephew of the renowned Tang dynasty general Yuchi Jingde. His father, Yuchi Zong, served as a general of the Imperial Guard. His mother, née Pei, dreamed she swallowed the moon and became pregnant. At just six years old, he was exceptionally intelligent, already penning a military treatise of several thousand words. At that time, the great monk Xuanzang had returned from his journey to the West, bringing with him a young novice who was skilled at memorization and questioning. Xuanzang took the boy to visit General Zong. When Zong called for Kuiji to pay respects, Xuanzang asked the boy to recite the book he had written. Xuanzang kept glancing at his own novice, who memorized the text as it was recited. When the recitation finished, Xuanzang tricked Kuiji’s father, saying, "This is an ancient book." Zong did not believe it. Xuanzang then had his novice repeat the text, and he did so without missing a single word. Enraged, the general accused his son of plagiarism and was about to have him killed. Xuanzang intervened and requested that Kuiji be allowed to become a monk. Kuiji replied, "Allow me three conditions: to partake in meat and wine, to be allowed color, and to eat an evening meal. If you agree, I will become a monk. Otherwise, I would rather die by the sword." Xuanzang, fond of his sharp wit and handsome demeanor, feigned agreement. Entering the monastic life, Kuiji resided at the Great Ci'en Monastery. He excelled in understanding both the Hinayana and Mahayana traditions. He could grasp any commentary or treatise at a single glance. Previously, Master Xuanzang had received the Yogacara-bhumi-sastra from the Indian master Silabhadra, yet no one had inherited the essential teachings of the Consciousness-Only doctrine. But Kuiji fully received this heritage, composing works that either upheld the tradition or offered new explanations. He authored a hundred texts and was known as the "Hundred-Treatise Master." Wherever he went to teach, many people benefited. Traveling east to Boling, someone requested he lecture on the Lotus Sutra. He then composed the \*Fahua Xuanzan Dashu\* in ten volumes. In its opening explanation of the title, he wrote: "Raising the great guiding theme of the ultimate teaching, it announces the overall name of the entire scripture. The Dharma contains both guidance and upholding, gathering all auspicious signs and hence is called 'wondrous.' The flower, simultaneously splendid and blooming, gathers all beauties to reveal the lotus. Thus, it establishes its doctrines and thoroughly elucidates the profound meaning." Teachers in the northern regions frequently taught and lectured on his work. <note>The Master's full biography is found in the \*Song Gaoseng Zhuan\*. The events of his ordination are recorded in the \*Shishi Biannian\*.</note>
