From a young age, he grew weary of the mundane world and devoted himself wholeheartedly to the pure path of spiritual practice. As he came of age, he crossed the vast ocean to seek the Chan meditation teachings of China. Upon arriving in the great land, he traveled to Mount Heng to pay respects to Great Master Nanyue. The master, discerning his spiritual capacity, imparted to him the Four Practices of Peaceful Conduct. Xuanguang's sharpness was like a divine awl—nothing could resist its point. He received and practiced these teachings, and before long realized the Samadhi of the Lotus Sutra. The master confirmed him, saying, "Your realization is true and not false. You should return to your homeland, skillfully employ expedient means, and spread my teachings." Xuanguang bowed in farewell and then returned south of the Yangtze, boarding a ship to cross the great ocean. Suddenly, he saw a colorful cloud with elegant oars and crimson banners arriving. A voice from the sky said, "The Heavenly Emperor summons the Chan master Xuanguang of the eastern sea to the Dragon Palace to expound the Dharma of personal realization." Xuanguang clasped his hands and respectfully declined, but saw a blue-robed attendant leading the way. He soon entered a palace city unlike any mortal government office—all around were beings of scales and shells, spirits and ghosts. After ascending the jeweled hall and climbing to a high platform, he spoke in response to questions for seven days. When the task was complete, the Dragon King personally saw him off. Xuanguang returned to his ship, and the sailors remarked that the vessel had drifted on the ocean without moving for half a day. Xuanguang then arrived at Ungju's Ong Mountain, where he built a thatched hut that later became a monastery. Among those who ascended his hall, one disciple realized the Samadhi of Fire Light, another realized the Samadhi of Water Light, and the rest were like birds gathering around Mount Sumeru, all sharing the same hue. As for Xuanguang's passing, no one knows where he went. In the ancestral hall of Nanyue, twenty-eight patriarchs are enshrined, and Xuanguang holds a place among themfrom the Song Dynasty Biographies of Eminent Monks.
