Monk Deyuan
His Dharma name was Mingjing (Bright Mirror). He was a son of the Shi family from Fuqing County. With sincere resolve, he traveled far seeking instruction on the essential truth. The Master said: "Our Buddha, with great compassion, equally expounded the Three Vehicles and the Five Teachings, guiding beings according to their capacities. In the end, he held up a flower before the assembly, transmitting the teaching beyond words—the marvelous mind of Nirvana, the true reality that is formless—to Mahākāśyapa. This was passed down from generation to generation until Bodhidharma came to the East, directly pointing to the human mind so that one could see one's true nature and become a Buddha. Turn your light inward and reflect. Illuminate your own mind, see your own nature. It is neither form nor emptiness, neither middle nor outside. It thoroughly penetrates the ten directions, merges the three times. The hundred thousand samādhis and the countless wondrous functions never depart from the present moment."
(Deyuan) had an awakening and immediately spoke a verse: "Originally pure and inconceivable, Adapting to circumstances, round or square, here and now. Samādhi arises before us, connecting to the great Way; Radiating light and manifesting auspicious signs, marvelously rare."
The Master said, "Guard and maintain this well. Perfectly bright, the seed of wisdom." He then entrusted a verse: "Single transmission, directly pointing: mind seals mind. Suchness, formless, manifests pure brilliance. I earnestly urge you, the Eastern Lord, to protect and preserve it. When the time comes, with compassionate intention, take on successors."
