> The Master was a son of the Zhang family from Dongyang, Wuzhou. At fourteen, he told his parents he wished to leave home and become a monk. They did not agree at first, so he vowed to fast until they allowed it. Concerned, his parents let him do as he wished. He went to study under a great master in Mingzhou and had his head shaved. At twenty-five, he received the full precepts at Zhulin Temple in Hangzhou. From then on, he carefully upheld the precepts and discipline, skillfully selecting wholesome practices. He then took up his staff and traveled to Jingshan, where he paid respects to National Teacher Guo Yi and gained some understanding. In the eleventh year of Dali, he withdrew to live in seclusion at Damei Mountain in Yuyao. After three or four years like this, he visited Master Ma at Zhongling and spent two more retreats there. He then went to Shitou at Nanyue and asked, "Apart from concentration and wisdom, what teaching does the Master use to guide others?" Shitou replied, "There are no servants here. What is there to separate?" The Master asked, "Then how can one understand?" Shitou replied, "Can you grasp hold of empty space?" The Master said, "Then it's not something that only starts today." Shitou asked, "Tell me, when did you come from over there?" The Master said, "I am not someone from over there." Shitou said, "I already know where you came from." The Master said, "Why does the Master falsely accuse someone like this?" Shitou said, "Your body is present right now." The Master said, "Even so, in the end, what can be shown to later generations?" Shitou asked, "Who do you say is a later generation?" With this, the Master fully recognized the ways of Guo Yi and Master Ma from the past, and penetrated even deeper into profound stillness. He soon chose a site and built a hut in Liyang, then moved to Jingkou, and settled at Zizhai Mountain in Dangyang—a place where five hundred arhats had lodged—in response to the spiritual connection there. At that time, Right Vice Director Pei was governing Jiangling. The monks of Chongye Temple petitioned for the Master to come and serve as their abbot, and Pei approved. When the Master arrived, both monastics and laypeople flocked to him, and offerings piled up. Pei himself also came daily with attendants to pay respects. The Master always conducted himself as an elder of honor. In greeting visitors, he never rose regardless of their rank. Pei especially admired his understanding of what truly matters. Thus the abbot of Tianhuang Monastery, Ling Jian, said to his disciples, "Our temple is in danger of burning down. If we can get Master Wu to come, perhaps we can revive it." So one night, they carried the Master together and seated him in the abbot's quarters. The next day, the monks of Chongye came and protested, but they lost the dispute and let it go. Later, the buildings of Tianhuang Monastery were indeed completely renewed. A monk asked, "What is the profound and mysterious teaching?" The Master replied, "Don't say that I understand the Buddha's teaching." The monk pressed, "But what about my doubts and attachments?" The Master replied, "Why not ask the old monk?" The monk said, "I have already asked." The Master said, "That is not a place for you to dwell." In the year Yuanhe Ding Hai, on the last day of the fourth month, the Master entered cessation. He was sixty years old, with thirty-five rainy seasons. On the fifth day of the eighth month of that year, a stupa was built, and his relic shrine was buried at the eastern edge of the prefecture. The monks Huizhen, Wenben, and Chongxin succeeded him.
