### 唐神暄

> Tang Shenxuan

生建陽之留氏。幼沈靜。有問而後有言。稍長客婺女。遂以淨人。入開元寺出家。一日婺守過之。見曰。此兒精神卓朗。異時必圍繞千眾。利益世間。宜趣薙落。以務進修。既受具。乃止息金華山北百家嚴石穴中。常晝夜持誦七佛俱胝呪不輟。上無屋廬。下無牀榻。雨露霜雪之變。則有紫雲覆之。如蓋狀。久之徙居赤松洞之東峯。禎瑞尤著見。貞元二年。遇志賢禪師。為說心法。獲證悟。而持誦益效。元和八年。中丞范敭遣使。施乳香氈罽器皿。而暄即以散之。無所受。中書舍人王仲。請就大雲寺。授四眾菩薩戒。十二年尚書孟簡。請說法於會稽。固辭不往。八月竟歸。示寂開元寺。春秋七十六。

> Born into the Liu family in Jianyang, he was quiet and reserved from childhood, speaking only when asked. As he grew older, he traveled to Wunü, where he entered Kaiyuan Temple as a lay devotee and eventually became a monk. One day, the prefect of Wu passed by and, seeing him, remarked, "This boy has a bright and extraordinary spirit. In time, he will surely gather a thousand followers and benefit the world. He should be tonsured without delay and devote himself to spiritual practice." After receiving full ordination, he retreated to a stone cave in Baijia Cliff, north of Jinhua Mountain, where he ceaselessly recited the mantra of the Seven Buddhas day and night. He had no roof overhead, no bed beneath him, but when rain, dew, frost, or snow fell, a purple cloud would cover him like a canopy. In time, he moved to the eastern peak of Chisong Cave, where auspicious signs became even more evident. In the second year of Zhenyuan (786 CE), he met Master Zhixian, who expounded the mind-dharma to him, leading him to awakening and making his recitation practice even more effective. In the eighth year of Yuanhe (813 CE), the Censor-in-Chief Fan Yang sent envoys bearing offerings of frankincense, felt, and vessels, but Xuan (the monk) distributed them all and kept nothing. The Imperial Secretary Wang Zhong invited him to Dayun Temple to confer the Bodhisattva precepts on the fourfold assembly. In the twelfth year (817 CE), Minister Meng Jian requested he preach in Kuaiji, but he firmly declined and did not go. In the eighth month, he returned and passed away in stillness at Kaiyuan Temple at the age of seventy-six.
