### 唐玄䇿

> Tang Xuan Ce

會稽之魯氏子。幼隨父賈。至天台。見鄉呈為光明會盛甚。蓋隋智者禪師所創始也。其法於每歲九月。合遠近黑白之眾。無慮數千萬。而䇿心獨偉之。遂依禪林寺智廣師出家。遊方見大寂於江西。頓去平日礙膺之物。後以黃之九井山。奇秀可愛。因結茅其上。以致學者。或以其地之邃僻。而謂䇿曰。子亦惡能堪此寂寞哉。䇿曰。吾方以為樂。未見其寂寞也。大中八年示滅。諡圓寂。塔號智覺。

> Lu Ce, a native of Kuaiji, was a young man who followed his father in trade from an early age. When they arrived at Tiantai, he saw a grand gathering of the local community celebrating the Bright Light Assembly, an event first established by the great master Zhiyi of the Sui Dynasty. Each year in the ninth month, the assembly drew together monks and laypeople from near and far—countless numbers of them. Lu Ce was deeply inspired by this spectacle and decided to leave the household life, taking ordination under Master Zhiguang at Chanlin Temple. He then traveled widely in search of wisdom, eventually meeting the great master Daji in Jiangxi. In that encounter, everything that had weighed on his mind fell away completely. Later, he discovered the Jiujing Mountain in Huangzhou—a place of striking natural beauty—and there he built a simple hut, where he began teaching those who came to him. When some remarked that such a remote and quiet place must be unbearably lonely, Lu Ce replied, "I find joy in it; I don't see the loneliness at all." In the eighth year of the Dazhong era, he passed away. He was posthumously honored with the title "Yuanji," and a stupa was built for him, named "Zhijue."
