> His surname was Pang, a native of Huizhou. In the beginning, Emperor Wu once dreamed of touring Mount Qi. Upon waking, he asked all his ministers where this place was, but no one knew. He then issued an edict across the realm to search for it, and it was found about seven li north of the city of Hui. A meditation hall was established on the site, with fields granted and monks ordained to ensure its perpetuity. Ning was registered there as a young novice. His precepts were strictly observed, his practice of meditation was clear and refined. Whenever he entered samadhi, he would often remain for months. At the age of seventy, he happened to place a high seat before a Buddha image, sat down, and burned one finger, remaining utterly motionless day and night. As the fire reached his arm, the smoke and flames grew fiercer. Some disciples tried to extinguish it, while others shouted to stop him, but he would not allow it. The fire eventually consumed his body. For seven days and seven nights, nothing remained but a heap of ashes. The community gathered his bones and buried them at that spot, erecting a stupa there.
