> The Master, whose family name was Ma, was from Fufeng. He lived in seclusion in Huanglong to escape the turmoil of the times. At thirteen, he became a novice monk. His natural disposition was exceptionally brilliant and extraordinary. Before he had received the full ordination precepts, he carried his book-satchel and journeyed to the Guanzhong region, where he studied under Master Kumarajiva. Kumarajiva asked him, "How could a young novice come from such a distance?" He replied, "Where the Dharma resides, what need is there to ask about distance?" Kumarajiva was delighted and thereafter imparted to him the profound essential teachings of all the sutras. One day, Emperor Yao Xing of the Later Qin said to him, "Ma Jichang was a man of profound learning and great excellence, but he was always arrogant toward the world of his time. A Dharma Master like yourself surely should not behave in that way." He replied, "When one uses the Dharma to govern the mind, the very purpose is precisely to eliminate such faults." The emperor marveled at this response with wonder and admiration. When the fortune of the Yao dynasty began to decline, he resided at the Central Temple south of the Huai River, where he customarily lectured on the Nirvana Sutra and the Panchavimshati-sahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra. He composed such treatises as "The Middle Way on the Nature of Reality" and "On Gradual Comprehension." He passed away during the Yuanjia era of the Liu Song dynasty, at the age of sixty-four.
