> Northern Wei Dynasty, Huining

> He traveled to Luoyang. Once he fell ill and died. After seven days, he revived and said: "I followed the underworld officials and came before King Yama. I stood in the hall, and the King sat on his throne. He had his clerks check the registers, and they said it was a mistaken summons—my lifespan was not yet over, so I was released to return. At that time, there were also five monks present: Zhi Sheng of Baoming Temple, Dao Pin of Banruo Temple, Tan Mozui of Rongjue Temple, Dao Heng of Chanlin Temple, and Bao Ming of Lingjue Temple. The King, seated at his desk, questioned each about their deeds in life. Zhi Sheng said, 'I only devoted myself to meditation.' Dao Pin said, 'I recited the Nirvana Sutra in forty-one scrolls.' Tan Mozui said, 'I lectured on the Nirvana and Avatamsaka Sutras, leading over a thousand disciples.' Dao Heng said, 'I encouraged lay followers to sponsor the copying of all scriptures and to carve ten Buddha statues.' Bao Ming said, 'Before becoming a monk, I served as the governor of Longxi and built Lingjue Temple. After ordination, I never missed my prostrations.' After hearing their words, the King admonished them, saying: 'The way of a monk demands that one focus the mind on meditation and recitation. Do not boast of trivial virtues, do not seek worldly gain, do not chase fame. Those who preach scriptures harbor discriminative views, relying on their abilities to look down on others. Those who solicit donations to build scriptures and statues chase wealth and stir up greed—this embodies the three poisons. Those in office who build temples rely on their power to oppress the people, using false piety to cover their sins.' Then he added: 'Zhi Sheng and Dao Pin should be escorted by blue-clad youths to be reborn in heaven. As for Tan Mozui, Dao Heng, and Bao Ming, they should be taken by dark-clad officers to be sent to hell.' This matter came to the attention of the court. Empress Dowager Hu secretly ordered the attendant official Xu He to search throughout the capital to verify whether the temple names and monk names that Ning had described were true or false. Soon, he reported back: 'The temple names and monk names indeed match Ning's account without error.' The Empress Dowager marveled at this and issued an edict inviting one hundred monks who practiced meditation and recitation to be supported regularly in the inner palace. She also decreed that from then on, monks were not permitted to carry scriptures or images and beg along the streets; only those who used private funds to build temples with their own wealth were allowed. Ning eventually fled to White Deer Mountain. From that point on, the central region came to value meditation and recitation.
