師。於咸淳元年五月入院。陞座拈香。祝聖罷。(問答不錄)乃云。聖諦第一義。高不可仰。深不可窺。無上妙覺心。大包天地。細入無間。諸佛親證。而無所得。百姓日用。而不知。金鷄啼處露堂堂。青鳳舞時明歷歷。向這裏負荷得去。靈山一會。總在目前。堪報不報之恩。共助無為之化。還委悉麼。天上有星皆拱北。人間無水不朝東。舉孝宗皇帝問佛照禪師云。世尊雪山六年。所成者何事。佛照奏云。將謂 陛下忘却。臣僧今日借水獻花。輒成一頌。問處分明答處親。太平天子太平臣。等閑喝散千峰雪。此土西天一樣春。
The Master entered the monastery in the fifth month of the first year of the Xianchun era. He ascended the seat, held up incense, and after offering blessings for the Emperor, (the questions and answers are not recorded) he said:
The Noble Truth, the supreme meaning — too high to gaze upon, too deep to fathom. The supreme, wondrous, enlightened mind — vast enough to encompass heaven and earth, subtle enough to enter where there is no gap. All Buddhas personally realize it, yet gain nothing. Ordinary people use it every day, yet do not know it. Where the golden rooster crows, it stands fully revealed; when the blue phoenix dances, it shines crystal clear. If you can carry this burden and go forth from right here, then the entire assembly on Vulture Peak is right before your eyes. Thus may we repay the kindness that cannot be repaid, and together assist the effortless transformation. Do you fully understand?
In the heavens, every star bows to the North; in the world, no water but flows to the East.
He then cited how Emperor Xiaozong asked Chan Master Fozhao: "The World-Honored One spent six years in the Snow Mountains — what did he accomplish?" Fozhao replied: "I thought Your Majesty had forgotten." This humble monk today borrows water to offer flowers, and composes a verse:
*The question was clear, the answer intimate —* *A peaceful emperor, a peaceful minister.* *Idly he roars and scatters the snows of a thousand peaks;* *This land and the Western Heaven share the same spring.*
留兩班上堂。現成公案。了無遷變。入得門來。一見便見。左顧則獅子嚬呻。右盻則象王迴轉。靈山一會儼然存。捏聚春風成一片。
上堂。九十長期。三分過二。覺海浪平。鐵舡無底。寒山子水牯牛作麼生。切不得道。大家在這裏。
Entering the hall. Of the ninety-day long retreat, two of the three parts have passed. The waves of the sea of delusion are calm; the iron boat has no bottom. What is Cold Mountain's water buffalo doing? You must not say, "Everyone is here."
上堂。伏暑未収。金風漸作。彈指聲中。門開樓閣。諸人還見彌勒麼(廼垂下一足)重九上堂。菊花黃。茱萸香。時節既至。其理自彰。且如何是自彰之理。德山低頭歸方丈。鵝湖驟步入僧堂。
黃檗寂囱和尚至。上堂。作家相見。啐啄尤乖。達士相逢。握鞭回首。撿點將來。已落第二。且道怡山今日與檗山如何相見。(彈指云)了臘八上堂。六載雪山修。幾乎沒合殺。半夜覩明星。和盲勃睟瞎。更言。奇哉大地一切眾生。具有如來智慧德相。但以妄想執著。不能證得。若據衲僧門下。當甚臭皮韈。
謝虗庵首座秉拂上堂。語底默底不是。非語非默亦非。虗庵有一轉語。用處絕毫絕厘。眾中或有箇漢出來。以指夾鼻。又作麼生支遣。只向它道。三十年後。清平渡水。
上堂。春已過半。百花兢芳。有些佛法。如何商量。(拍床云)千言萬語無人會。又逐流鶯過短墻上堂。(拈主丈召大眾云)有主丈與主丈。擊木無聲。無主丈奪主丈。敲空作響。還見芭蕉和尚麼。(靠主丈云)莫妄想。
佛涅槃上堂。瞿曇色相紫金容。雨後青山插半空。覿面當機如不薦。桃花依舊咲春風。
上堂。定本無門。從何而入。坐斷兩頭。中亦不立。沒可把。絕承當。風來一陣芰荷香。
乾會節上堂。舉僧問壽山。年多少。山云。與虗空同年。僧云。虗空年多少。山云。與壽山同年。頌云。虗空年與壽山同。答處由來在問宗。但見皇風成一片。不知何處是疆封。
上堂。六月中三伏節。到處去到處熱。還有不熱者麼。(噓一聲下座)上堂。世尊不說說。迦葉不聞聞。兩个無孔鐵鎚。打就一合乾坤。眾中或有个出來道。我會也我會也。怡山敢保。棗子渾崙吞。
上堂。直下是直下是。賺殺人疑殺你。(以拂子指上云)上是天。(指下云)下是地。疑个甚麼。(良久云)參上堂。崑山求玉。玉不在於崑山。赤水尋珠。珠豈藏於赤水。益上座。空奮双拳。盡虗空界內。恒河沙數。一一撮來。無有不是寶者。因甚麼。主丈喚作主丈。拂子喚作拂子。(良久云)莫謾人好元旦上堂。律管吹灰。勾芒布令。六國風清。九天雲靜。有般漢不知時節。更出來道。如何是新年頭佛法。只對它道。伏惟懽慶。
佛涅槃上堂。二月十五。瞿曇滅度。文殊頓足普賢悲。外道拊掌波旬舞。(拍床云)甜瓜徹蔕甜。苦瓠連根苦。
上堂。識得一。萬事畢。佛法颺在它方。世法拈靠一壁。有問奇特因緣。立秋已過五日。
中秋上堂。(竪拂子云)此段光明。輝天鑒地。靈山錯話。曹溪錯指。霧暗雲屯兮。歷歷常明。地陷天崩兮。也只如是。(擲下拂子云)賺殺你上堂。有一則語。久欲拈出。未動舌頭。遍界狼藉。且作麼生收拾(便下座)上堂。臘月二十五。一曲重新舉。唱寡兮和稀。韻高兮調古。堪悲堪笑。老東山。謾說豆子山前打瓦皷。
