### 石橋寫圓悟心要

> Stone Bridge Writes Yuanwu's Essential Teachings

語曰心要。字曰心畫。見其畫須求其心。求其心須得其要。倘得其要。則便見圓悟與石橋。同一舌根。共腕頭力。信口而說。信筆而書。無古今毫髮之間。設或泥其跡執其言。則二大老。相去。何止隔四世矣。

> The saying goes, "The mind is the essence; the written word is the mind's portrait." To see the portrait, one must seek the mind; to seek the mind, one must grasp its essence. If one grasps the essence, then one will see that Yuanwu and Shiqiao share the same root of speech, with the strength of a single hand. They speak freely and write freely, with not the slightest gap between past and present. But if one clings to the traces and holds fast to the words, then these two great masters—how far apart they would seem, separated by more than four generations!
