The Extensive Record of Chan Master Cishou Huaishen is a compilation of the sayings of the Song Dynasty eminent monk Cishou Huaishen, edited by his attendants Shanqing, Shansui, Zongxian, and Pushao. Active in the late Northern Song Dynasty, Master Huaishen was a disciple of Changlu Chongxin and belonged to the Yunmen lineage. He later served as abbot of several monasteries, including Zifu Temple and Huilin Temple, propagating Chan teachings amidst turbulent times. The work contains his instructional discourses, dialogues on pivotal moments, and gathas, presenting profound teachings in an accessible manner. It emphasizes the integration of Pure Land and Chan practice, advocating compassionate Buddha-recitation and earnest cultivation, and holds significant influence in the syncretic thought of Chan and Pure Land during the Song Dynasty. This record is an important text for studying Master Huaishen's thought and the development of Song Dynasty Chan Buddhism, occupying a unique place in Buddhist history.
