師在雙嶺受請。與英勝二首座相別云。三年聚首。無事不知。檢點將來。不無滲漏。以拄杖劃一劃云。這箇且止。宗門事作麼生。英云。須彌安鼻孔。師云。與麼則臨崖看虎眼。特地一場愁。英云。深沙努眼睛。師云。爭奈聖凡無異路。方便有多門。英云。鐵蛇鑽不入。師云。這般漢有甚共語處。英云。自緣根力淺。莫怨太陽春。却劃一劃云。宗門事且止。這箇事作麼生。師便掌。英云。這漳州子莫無去就。師云。你這般見解。不打更待何時。又打。英云。也是老僧招得。
The Master, while at Twin Ridges, accepted an invitation. Taking leave of Head Monks Ying and Sheng, he said, "Three years together, and nothing goes unknown. Yet upon reflection, there are still leaks and flaws." Making a line with his staff, he said, "Setting this aside, what about the matter of the school?"
Ying said, "Mount Sumeru placed on a nostril."
The Master said, "If so, then staring at a tiger's eyes from the cliff's edge—a deliberate cause for worry."
Ying said, "The deep sands bulge with eyes."
The Master said, "What can be done? For sages and ordinary beings, there is no separate path; for skillful means, there are many gates."
Ying said, "An iron snake cannot bore through."
The Master said, "What is there to discuss with such a fellow?"
Ying said, "It's due to my own shallow roots and weak strength—do not blame the sun of spring."
Ying then made a line himself and said, "Setting the school's matter aside, what about this matter?"
The Master thereupon gave him a slap.
Ying said, "This fellow from Zhangzhou—has he no sense of propriety?"
The Master said, "With such views as yours, if I don't strike now, when will I?" And he struck again.
Ying said, "It was this old monk who brought it upon himself."
英勝二人。到山相訪。英云。和尚尋常愛檢點諸方。今日為甚。却來古庿裏作活計。師云。打草只要蛇驚。英云。且莫塗糊人好。師云。你又刺頭入膠盆作什麼。英云。古人道。我見兩箇泥牛鬪入海。所以住山。未審和尚。見箇什麼。師云。你他時異日。有把茅蓋頭。人來問你。你作麼生祗對。英云。山頭不如嶺尾。師云。你且道當得住山事麼。英云。使钁不及拖犁。師云。還曾夢見古人麼。英云。和尚又作麼生。師展兩手。英云。鰕跳不出斗。師云。莫將三寸燭。擬並太陽輝。英云。爭奈公案見在。師云。亂統禪和。如麻似粟。
Ying and Sheng, two of them, arrived at the mountain together and paid a visit. Ying said, "Master, you usually like to scrutinize the various quarters. Why today, on the contrary, have you come to an old temple and made your living here?" The Master said, "Striking the grass only needs to startle the snake." Ying said, "But don't confuse people." The Master said, "And why are you sticking your head into a glue pot?" Ying said, "The ancients said, 'I saw two clay oxen fighting, charging into the sea.' That's why I dwell in the mountains. I haven't understood, Master—what is it that you see?" The Master said, "Later, in times to come, when you have a thatched hut to cover your head, and someone comes to question you, how will you respond?" Ying said, "The head of the mountain is not as good as the foot of the ridge." The Master said, "Can you truly handle the affairs of dwelling in the mountains?" Ying said, "Using a hoe is not as good as pulling a plow." The Master said, "Have you even dreamed of the ancients?" Ying said, "And what about you, Master?" The Master spread out both hands. Ying said, "A shrimp cannot leap out of the measuring bucket." The Master said, "Don't compare a three-inch candle to the radiance of the great sun." Ying said, "Yet this case remains right before us." The Master said, "Chaotic Chan adepts are like hemp and millet—numerous beyond measure."
師起法堂。乃問二人。我欲來這裏起法堂。且道作得箇什麼向當。英云。賊是小人。師云。邵武子。動著便作屎臭氣。英云。曾輕霜雪苦。師云。明珠自有千金價。誰肯林邊打雀兒。英云。大似持鉢不得。詐道不飢。師却指勝云。你且道合作得箇什麼向當好𠰚。勝云。本來無位次。不用強安排。師云。你這驢漢安向甚處著。勝云。一任敲甎打瓦。師云。也只是箇杜撰巡官。英云。若是千金寶。何須打雀兒。師云。東家人死。西家助哀。英云。路見不平。
The master rose and entered the Dharma hall, then asked the two monks, "I want to build a Dharma hall here. Tell me, what would be the right thing to make of it?"
Ying said, "A thief is but a petty person."
The master said, "You man from Shaowu—you let out a stench of filth the moment you're provoked."
Ying said, "I have endured the hardships of frost and snow."
The master said, "A bright pearl is naturally worth a thousand in gold—who would bother hammering stones by the forest's edge?"
Ying said, "This is like someone who can't hold his alms bowl, yet pretends he isn't hungry."
The master then pointed to Sheng and said, "You—tell me, what would be the right thing to make of it?"
Sheng said, "Originally there is no rank or position—there's no need to force an arrangement."
The master said, "You donkey-headed fellow—where would you place it?"
Sheng said, "I'll do as I please, knocking bricks and striking tiles."
The master said, "You're nothing but a charlatan fortune-teller."
Ying said, "If it's a jewel worth a thousand in gold, why bother hammering stones?"
The master said, "Someone in the eastern house has died—the western house joins in the mourning."
Ying said, "One cannot stand by when there's injustice on the road."
一日英舉大梅斷夾山定山生死中有佛無佛因緣。問師云。此箇公案作麼生。師云。大梅當時何不與他本分草料。英云。作麼生。師便打。英云。一場儱侗。師云。你試下一轉語看。英云。一狀領過。師云。矮子看戲。
One day, Ying raised the story of Damei, Duanjia, and Jingshan discussing whether there is Buddha or no Buddha in life and death. He asked the Master, "What about this koan?" The Master said, "Why didn't Damei give him his proper share of fodder at the time?" Ying said, "What do you mean?" The Master struck him. Ying said, "What a muddled affair." The Master said, "Try making a turning word yourself." Ying said, "One case, accepted as is." The Master said, "A dwarf watching a play."
舉盤山光境話。英云。只如保福與麼說話。未免掛人唇齒。師云。你作麼生。英作掌勢。師云。自屎不知臭。英云。和尚作麼生。師云。若據我見處。掘箇地坑。和你一時埋却。且要天下太平。
Raise the Pan Shan Guang Jing story. Ying said, "Just like Baofu speaking this way, it inevitably leaves something for others to discuss." The Master said, "What do you make of it?" Ying made a gesture with his palm. The Master said, "You don't recognize your own filth as stinking." Ying said, "What about you, Master?" The Master said, "From where I see it, I'd dig a pit and bury you all at once, just to keep the world at peace."
黃龍秀維那與數僧至。師云。重疊關山路。闍梨從什麼處來。秀云。三門裏來。師云。有三門。則從三門裏來。無三門從什麼處來。秀云。恁麼則不從門入也。師云。因什麼得到這裏。秀云。法昌門下水泄不通。師云。不解登山。剛嫌路曲。秀擬議。師云。第二參頭道。僧云。何不問取維那。師云。酌然龍象蹴踏。非驢所堪。且坐喫茶。人事了。秀乃云。適來公案。可謂光前絕後。師云。射虎不真。徒勞沒羽。秀云。何得壓良為賤。師云。佛法不是這箇道理。
Venerable Xiuning, the head monk of Huanglong, arrived with several monks. The master asked, "The mountain roads were winding and layered—where did you come from?"
Xiuning replied, "I came through the triple gate."
The master said, "If there is a triple gate, then you came through it. But if there is no triple gate, where did you come from?"
Xiuning said, "In that case, I didn't enter through any gate at all."
The master asked, "Then how did you get here?"
Xiuning said, "At Fachang, even water cannot leak through, let alone people."
The master said, "You don't know how to climb a mountain, yet you complain the path is crooked."
Xiuning hesitated, searching for words. The master said to the second monk, "You answer for him."
The monk said, "Why not ask the head monk directly?"
The master said, "Indeed, a dragon-elephant's trampling is not something a donkey can bear. Sit down and have some tea."
After the formalities, Xiuning said, "That exchange just now—truly it shines before and surpasses after."
The master said, "Shooting a tiger without accuracy only wastes your arrows."
Xiuning said, "Why force the good to be seen as inferior?"
The master said, "The Dharma is not about such reasoning."
師乃問秀。近離什麼處。秀云。黃龍。師云。我聞黃龍有三關語是否。秀云。是。師云。將為老僧不知。秀云。有問有答。師云。未到法昌。不妨疑著。秀云。過在什麼處。師打一掌云。且莫鈍致黃龍。乃送歸安下處。秀云。古人道。一言相契則住。一言不契則去。且道。住則是。去則是。師云。你看。這漢一場敗闕。秀云。與麼則兵隨印轉。客任主裁。師云。便請入堂掛搭。秀起庵成。師云。庵成了。只是未有主人在。秀云。大似對面不相識。師云。驢前馬後漢。秀云。氣急殺人。師云。橫抱小兒。擬彰黃簡。秀云。却請和尚別作箇主人來。師云。九五須還天子貴。群雄徒自起干戈。秀云。到頭霜夜月。任運落前溪。師云。千里神駒追電去。蹇驢猶自沒泥沙。
The Master then asked Xiu, "Where have you come from recently?" Xiu said, "Huanglong." The Master said, "I hear Huanglong has the ‘Three Barriers’ sayings—is that so?" Xiu said, "Yes." The Master said, "Did you think I wouldn't know?" Xiu said, "There are questions, and there are answers." The Master said, "Before arriving at Fachang, one might indeed have doubts." Xiu said, "Where is the fault?" The Master struck him once and said, "Don't be so dull toward Huanglong." Then he sent him back to his lodging. Xiu said, "The ancients said: If words resonate, one stays; if words don't resonate, one leaves. Tell me—is staying right, or is leaving right?" The Master said, "Look at this fellow—what a complete failure." Xiu said, "If so, then troops follow the seal's turn, and guests defer to the host's decision." The Master said, "Then please enter the hall and hang up your traveling bag." Xiu rose and formed a small hut with his hands. The Master said, "The hut is made, but it still lacks a master." Xiu said, "It's like facing someone you don't recognize." The Master said, "A fellow behind the donkey and before the horse." Xiu said, "This is maddening!" The Master said, "Holding a child across your chest, you intend to display a yellow slip." Xiu said, "Then please, Master, come and be the host yourself." The Master said, "The sovereign's ninety-five—still must belong to the Son of Heaven; the many heroes only stir up weapons in vain." Xiu said, "In the end, the frosty night moon—let it drift down into the front stream." The Master said, "A thousand-li divine steed chases lightning away; a lame donkey still sinks in the mud and sand."
秀一日問師。承聞和尚久止浮山。屢參興化。為什麼却法嗣北禪。師云。瘥病不假驢駝藥。秀云。傷龜恕鱉。不免傍觀。師云。將謂無人檢點。乃拈起拄杖云。且道者箇從什麼處得來。秀云。這老漢敗闕也不知。師云。不是任公子。徒勞話釣竿。黃龍南禪師至。人事喫茶了。師乃云。近日黃龍製得一般茶。實為諸方未有。南云。那裏得這消息來。師云。勸君不用鐫頑石。南云。老老大大。道聽途說。師云。爭奈公案見在。南云。這裏尋常如何造作。師云。老老大大。說話也不照顧些子。南云。賴得左右無人。師乃喚侍者。更點一椀茶。下茶至。南云。若無造作。這箇從什麼處得來。師便作撥茶勢。南云。這箇猶是和尚受用邊事。利人事又作麼生。師云。遇臨濟則敲出骨髓。逢德山則揳破腦門。
One day, Xiu asked the Master, "I've heard that you spent a long time at Fushan and visited Xinghua many times. Why do you trace your Dharma lineage to Beichan instead?"
The Master said, "To cure an illness, one doesn't need a donkey to carry the medicine."
Xiu said, "Hurting the turtle and sparing the tortoise—it's hard not to notice from the sidelines."
The Master said, "I thought no one would check up on me." Then he picked up his staff and said, "Tell me, where did this come from?"
Xiu said, "This old fellow doesn't even realize he's exposed his weakness."
The Master said, "If you're not Master Ren, it's futile to talk about fishing rods."
When Chan Master Huanglong Nan arrived and finished the customary tea, the Master said, "Recently, Huanglong has made a special kind of tea—truly something no other place has."
Nan said, "Where did you hear such news?"
The Master said, "I advise you not to carve on hard stone."
Nan said, "At your age, you're just repeating gossip."
The Master said, "What can you do? The case is right here before us."
Nan said, "How do you usually conduct yourself here?"
The Master said, "At your age, you don't even watch your words."
Nan said, "Luckily there's no one else around."
The Master then called his attendant and asked for another bowl of tea. When the tea arrived, Nan said, "If there's no deliberate effort, where did this come from?"
The Master made a gesture of pushing the tea aside. Nan said, "This is still on the side of your personal enjoyment. What about benefiting others?"
The Master said, "When facing Linji, I'd strike out his marrow; when meeting Deshan, I'd smash open his skull."
因與南禪師。舉程大鄉看生緣話。師云。何不直下與伊勦絕却。南云。也曾為蛇𦘕足。是伊自不瞥地。師云。和尚如何為他。南云。咬盡生薑呷□醋。師云。流俗阿師。又與麼去。南云。和尚意作麼生。師拈起拂子便打。南云。這老漢也是無人情。
The Master spoke with Master Nan about the story of Cheng Daxiang observing the “original nature” (sheng yuan) saying. The Master said, “Why not cut it off entirely for him right at that moment?” Nan said, “I did add a foot to the snake— it's just that he didn't see clearly on his own.” The Master asked, “How did you handle it for him, sir?” Nan replied, “I gnawed all the ginger down and sipped vinegar.” The Master remarked, “A common fellow! Gone astray again like that.” Nan countered, “What is your intention, Master?” The Master picked up his whisk and struck him. Nan said, “This old fellow is utterly devoid of sympathy.”
師因舉在湖南時。曾問興化。知有底人。向什麼處去。化云。善財拄杖子。師云。我不問善財拄杖子。且道知有底人。向什麼處去。化云。或則登山。或則渡水。師云。和尚只解步步登高。不解從空放下。化云。老僧雖則年邁。要且不負來機。南云。和尚當時作麼生。師云。我錯恠興化。南云。而今知也。且道從什麼處去。師云。你問阿誰。南云。佯聾詐啞作什麼。師云。雖然如是。要且不負來機。
The Master, while staying in Hunan, once asked Xinghua, "Where does a person who has realized the Truth go after death?" Xinghua replied, "Sudhana's walking stick." The Master said, "I’m not asking about Sudhana’s walking stick. Tell me, where does such a person go?" Xinghua said, "Sometimes they climb mountains, sometimes they cross rivers." The Master remarked, "Master, you only know how to climb higher step by step, but you don’t know how to let go and descend from the emptiness above." Xinghua said, "Though I am old, I do not fail those who come with questions." Nan (a disciple) asked, "What did you say at that time, Master?" The Master said, "I wrongfully blamed Xinghua." Nan asked, "Now I understand. But tell me, where does such a person go?" The Master said, "Whom are you asking?" Nan said, "Why pretend to be deaf and mute?" The Master said, "Even so, I do not fail those who come with questions."
師一日在門前栽松。南和尚至。乃云。小院小舍。栽許多。作什麼。師云。臨濟道底。南云。栽得多少。師云。但見猿棲鶴宿。寧知聳漢侵雲。南乃指面前石山云。這裏為什麼不栽却。師云。功不浪施。南云。也只是無下手處。師却指石上松云。這箇從什麼處得。因作石松詩云。盤根迸石苔鋪縫。偃蹇龍形積翠深。擎鶴插空多雨勢。帶雲籠月足潮音。應無要壓群峯意。終有常懷竚雪心。猿凍下崖來上哭。禪餘獨對苦中吟。
One day, the Master was planting pine trees in front of the temple gate. Master Nan arrived and said, "This small temple and modest quarters—why plant so many trees?" The Master replied, "That's what Linji meant." Nan asked, "How many have you planted?" The Master said, "One only sees cranes roosting and monkeys dwelling—how could one know they rise to touch the clouds?" Nan pointed to the rocky mountain before them and said, "Why not plant them here?" The Master replied, "No effort is wasted in vain." Nan said, "It's just that there's no place to start." The Master, pointing to a pine growing on the rock, asked, "Where did this one come from?" He then composed a poem about the rock pine:
Roots spiraling through stone, moss filling the cracks, Dragon-like, twisted form, deep in gathered green. Holding cranes, piercing the sky, heavy with rain, Wrapped in clouds, veiling the moon, full of the tide's sound. It has no intent to overshadow the peaks, Yet always holds a heart waiting for snow. Monkeys, frozen, descend the cliff, crying from above; After meditation, alone, I face this and chant amidst suffering.
兜率寬和尚至。師云。和尚久居兜率。為什麼。却到人間。寬云。暫時行履。師云。來時彌勒菩薩在什麼處。寬云。不知。師云。和尚從兜率來麼。寬云。是。師云。為什麼。却不知。寬云。向道不知。說什麼來不來。師云。無孔鐵槌。有甚用處。寬云。看這老漢一場懡㦬。師與寬和尚看雪次。師云。好雪。寬云。好白。師云。雪與白。相去多少。寬云。如掌作拳。師乃於欄上。拏雪便打云。你且道是拳是掌。寬云。麤行沙門。師云。此是文殊大人境界。因有詩云。倚欄看臈雪。光射曉堂寒。萬德文殊海。千重世界寬。泥牛光影亂。石女素衣完。會得青春意。桃花悟更難。
冬夜與感首座喫菓子。師遂拈起一片橘子云。這箇滋味。何似黃龍。感云。須待甞過始得。師云。驗人端的處。下口便知音。感云。末代禪師。多虗少實。師又拈起托子云。者箇作麼生甞。感云。須是和尚始得。師云。一箇托子。早是不奈何。感云。饒人不是弱漢。
師問訥首座。古人道。天地與我同根。萬物與我一體。你且道。山河大地。與你自己是同是別。訥云不別。師又竪起拂子云。這箇𠰚。訥云。這箇亦然。師云。你有幾箇自己。訥云。法有多種。理本不二。師遂扣床一下云。你還知痛痒否。訥云。不知。師云。話墮阿師。不能打得你。
師一日與訥首座修花壇。乃問訥云。南泉道。人人見此一株花。如夢相似。且道你見似箇什麼。訥云。只是一株花。師云。與麼則你也只在南泉窠窟裏。訥云。未審古人意作麼生。師云。拈甎過來。訥過甎了又問。師云。古人去世久矣。
問豁長老。聞說你曾講唯識論是否。豁云。粗曾習聽。師云。三界唯心。萬法唯識。明有此理。豁云。是。師乃竪起拂子云。還見麼。豁云。見。師云。見箇什麼。豁云。見拂子。師云。老老大大。為什麼五戒不持。豁云。和尚何得不信佛語。師云。癡人棒打不死。你還夢見唯識麼。
師問肇維那。甚處來。肇云。討菜來。師云。甚處去。肇云。寮中去。師云。尋常問你生死事。為什麼。不與麼祗對。肇云。和尚不曾問某甲。師云。且道你死向什麼處去。肇云。一任卜度。師云。不信道。肇云。某甲與麼祗對。有甚不得。師云。將為卜你不著。肇云。且道向什麼處去。師云。鬼窟裏去。肇云。且莫以己妨人。師云。爭奈贓物在老僧手裏。
問肇。日出心光耀。天陰性地昏。不知天地者。剛道有乾坤。而今日出也。那箇是你心光。肇云。不可更有。師云。不知天地者剛道有乾坤。且道知天地者。乾坤向什麼處去。肇云。三界唯心。不可更有。師云。廚下燒火。你覺肚皮熱麼。肇云。問這箇作什麼。師云。伎死禪和。如麻似粟。
師問肇。溈山水牯牛話。你作麼生會。肇云。無這箇閑功夫。師云。只如世尊拈花。迦葉微笑。又作麼生。肇云。不妨令人疑著。師云。龍頭蛇尾漢。
問僧。一切聲是佛聲是否。僧云。是。師云。為什麼。鵶作鴉聲。鵲作鵲噪。僧云。和尚自生分別。師便打。又問僧。一切聲是佛聲是否。僧云。不是。師云。為什麼不是。僧云。鴉作鵶聲。鵲作鵲噪。師亦打。後有僧問師。前頭是且從打。不是為什麼亦打。師又打云。且聽明眼人斷看。
歲夜喫湯次。感首座云。昔日北禪分歲。曾烹露地白牛。和尚今夜分歲。有何施設。師云。臈雪連天白。春風逼戶寒。感云。大眾喫箇什麼。師云。莫嫌冷淡無滋味。一飽能消萬劫飢。感云。未審是什麼人置辦。師云。無慚愧漢。來處也不知。
登首座至。師云。你作叢林表帥。為什麼。被人喚作登無明。登便抽坐具作打勢。師云。且莫亂做。別處即得。法昌門下不容你。登擬議。師便打一掌。登云。將謂侯白。師云。你作這般說話。也道我作禪客。登云。法昌門下。可謂風吹不入。師云。教你入得。堪作什麼。師問登。無明實性即佛性。無明在這裏。佛性在什麼處。登云。不可別有。師云。喚你作釋迦老子得麼。登云。至道無難。唯嫌揀擇。師云。你夢見三祖。登云。和尚尊意如何。師便打。登云。打即不無。且道佛性在什麼處。師拈棒。登便走云。今日被這老漢折挫一掌。師云。似這般不知痛痒漢。打殺也無罪過。
石門臯和尚。去住雲嵓。師云。只見雲歸碧嶂。和尚為什麼。入郭辤山。皐云。偶徇時機。師云。主人公在什麼處。臯云。避喧求靜。豈是高人。師云。似則似。是即未是。皐云。和尚作麼生。師竪起拂子云。是喧是靜。皐無語。師云。不信道。師問臯。近離什麼處。臯云。石門。師云。我聞石門路嶮。水泄不通。因甚到這裏。臯云。十里雙牌。五里單堠。師云。途中事作麼生。臯云。到處行松色。時時聽水聲。師云。來時水牯牛。在甚麼處。臯云。自有人看。師云。鼻索為什麼在法昌手裏。臯云。這老漢瞞却多少人。隨手打一坐具。師云。三十年。撈龍打鳳。今日被鼠咬。
恭首座住禪林訪師。師云。見說你要為黃龍燒香是否。恭云。不敢。師云。我聞龍生龍子。須是解興雲致雨始得。恭云。但隨家豐儉。師云。你未拈香。早鈍致黃龍了也。恭云。和尚且莫多口。師云。你且道黃龍實頭事作麼生。恭提起坐具。師乃喚行者。為我過坐具來。行者提在手中。師便打云。他時後日也道見老僧來。
寶峯乾化主至。喫茶了。師云。我無可捨施。只有一箇瓢子送你。乾纔接。師云。你且道寶峯還有麼。乾云。有。師云。若有何須更要。乾云。唯多不才。師云。你也只作得箇化主。乾云。有頭無尾得人憎。師云。自是你無這手脚。乾遂掣去。師云。停囚長智。師送乾出三門云。回到寶峯。為我傳語英邵武。乾云。㒹言倒語作什麼。師云。不因你祗對。洎合忘却。雖然如是。它時悟去。始知我老婆心。
哲首座來。師云。山深路遠。何煩訪及。哲云。仁義道中。不為分外。師云。將得什麼來。哲叉手近前。師云。只這箇。為當別有。哲展坐具。師云。前頭較些子。後頭打不著。哲云。且容某甲人事。師云。近離什麼處。哲云。雲居。師云。峯頂事作麼生。哲云。多少人疑著。師卓拄杖云。弘覺鼻孔何似這箇。哲云。草賊大敗。師云。這僧話頭也不識。哲云。和尚問什麼。師云。我只問你弘覺鼻孔。哲云。又道不識話頭。師云。不謬作翠嵓弟子。
一日哲問師。和尚室中。尋常開示機緣。願聞一兩則。師云。暗裏抽橫骨。明中坐舌頭。你作麼生。哲云。和尚本是雲門宗胄。為什麼舉洞上因緣。師乃踢出一隻鞋。哲便休。
臯長老聞師見虎。乃云。見說和尚那日山上作一場佛事不小。師云。多口阿師。臯云。好好相問。師作掌勢。臯云。好箇虎。只是不解咬人。師便打云。莫道不咬人。臯云。也是如虫蝕木。師云。今日咬著死漢。
心禪師至。閑坐次。師云。近日法席。可殺興盛。心云。家家觀世音。師云。還有咬人師子麼。心云。爐鞴之所。鈍鐵尤多。師云。聞和尚室中有拳頭話是否。心云。家醜莫外揚。師乃拈起钁云。何似我這箇。心云。真不掩偽。師云。生死界中使那箇即是。心云。不勞懸石鏡。天曉自鷄鳴。師云。與麼討人驢年去。因說話次。心云。近日人傳和尚風幡頌甚好。師云。且道祖師前頭為人好。後頭為人好。心云。祖師終不妄語。師云。是則是。祖師意作麼生。心云。豈不見道。不是風動。不是幡動。師云。狐狸渡氷。有甚快活。心云。和尚意作麼生。師以拂搖之。心云。也是為蛇𦘕足。師云。且莫亂統。心云。須是和尚始得。師云。世事但將公道斷。
徐龍圖看楞嚴經。至妙性圓明離諸名相。徐云。佛意誠謂幽深。師云。你如何會。徐欲祗對。師以拂子便打。徐云。和尚也無些子人情。師云。我若不打你。又堪作什麼。却問黃龍。釋迦老子到這裏。還有出身處麼。龍却打一拂。師云。且聽諸方斷看。
百丈政和尚至。師云。見說你在慈明會裏。曾有野狐頌是否。政云。是。師云。古人意作麼生。政云。眼花山影轉。師云。是你見處如此。政云。你不肯我那。師云。與麼說話。還曾夢見野狐。師乃云。我且問你。大修行人。還落因果也無。政云。檐折知柴重。師云。我不問你柴重不重。且道落因果不落。政云。你還識因果也未。師云。瞎漢話頭也不識。政云。爭奈慈明肯我。師云。你今日一場郎當不少。政云。和尚意作麼生。師遂踢倒香臺。政擬議。師云。且待你更疑三十年。政云。你見北禪。我也見北禪。你參興化。我也參興化。為什麼常常不肯我。師云。你見興化北禪。我也總知。只是你少商搉在。政去。師送三門云。旬日道話。寧無短長。今日相別。無以為意。有一條拄杖送師。政擬接。師云。且道你將去。如何受用。政云。扶過斷橋水。伴歸無月村。師云。忽遇德山臨濟時如何。政云。棒在和尚手裏。師遂擲拄杖云。可惜許。分付不著人。
師行脚時。在圓通。遇大覺入京。陞座云。此事分明。宜薦取。莫教累劫受輪回。師出問。如何是此事。覺云。薦取。師云。頭上是天。脚下是地。薦箇什麼。覺云。不是知音者。徒勞話歲寒。師云。豈無方便。覺云。胡人飲乳。返恠良醫。師云。暴虎憑河。徒誇好手。拍一拍歸眾。
大覺小參。師出眾問。承古有言。堪羨一堂無事客。臥雲深處不朝天。和尚為什麼却入京城。覺云。青山藏不得。明月却相客。師云。與麼則君王若不垂三請。爭得先生出舊廬。覺云。今日遭人點檢。師云。和尚幸是當人。覺云。想你不是好心。師云。象駕已趨於帝里。利人一句請宣揚。覺云。衣珠不用從他覔。明月分明處處圓。師云。這箇猶是古人糟粕。利人事作麼生。覺云。重言不當吃。師云。與麼則龍樓鳴法鼓。鶴鑰振金鍾去也。覺云。謝子證明。師便禮拜。
師到興化。化云。近離什麼處。師云。北禪。化云。北禪老漢。有鼻孔也無。師云。湖南長老。箇箇一般。化云。莫將鶴唳悞作鶯啼。師云。和尚且低聲。化云。你著忙作什麼。師云。和尚也不少。化云。徹底撞著聱頭。師云。看這老漢。一場懡㦬。
師一日問興化。寶劒知師藏已久。今日當場略借看。化云。不借。師云。為什麼不借。化云。不是張華眼。徒窺射斗光。師云。用者如何。化云。橫身當宇宙。誰是出頭人。師便作引頸勢。化云。嗄。師云。喏。便歸眾。
師一日問興化。祖意西來即不問。水出高源事若何。化云。穿過髑髏猶未覺。師云。便恁麼會時如何。化云。錯。師拊一掌。化便打。師云。看這老漢。手忙脚亂。拍一拍便歸眾。
師到北禪。禪問。近離什麼處。師云。福嚴。禪云。思大鼻孔長多少。師云。與和尚當時見底一般。禪云。你且道我見時長多少。師云。和尚大似不曾到福嚴。禪云。學語之流。來時馬大師安樂否。師云。安樂。禪云。向你道箇什麼。師云。教和尚莫亂統。禪云。念你是新到。不能打得你。師云。某甲亦放過和尚。喫茶次。禪問。鄉里什麼處。師云。漳州。禪云。三平在彼作什麼。師云。說禪說道。禪云。年多少。師云。與露柱齊年。禪云。有露柱且從。無露柱年多少。師云。無露柱一年不少。禪云。半夜放烏鷄。
北禪與興化閑坐次。禪云。和尚當時見唐明事。殊不聞舉著。化云。好事不如無。禪云。也要大家知。化不對。禪云。有問有答。何得緘口無言。化亦不對。禪云。聞說汾陽有西河師子話是否。化云。是。禪云。可殺威獰。化云。不見道來者咬殺。禪云。與麼則汾陽門下。道絕人荒去也。化乃竪起拂子云。這箇因甚到今日。
師在北禪時。作侍者。立次。禪遂舉此話。問師云。子到這裏作麼生。師云。養子不及父。家門一世衰。禪云。你具什麼眼目。師云。若是咬人師子。終不與麼。
次日興化到北禪。師乃問訊。化指堦前松樹云。者箇是什麼人裁。師云。龍牙。化云。何似趙州栢樹。師云。尊宿眼。在什麼處。化云。閙市裏虎。化到真堂前云。這箇是甚人真。師云。龍牙。化云。既是龍牙。為什麼却在北禪堂裏。師云。一彩兩賽。化云。真在這裏。龍牙在什麼處。師擬議。化便打一掌云。莫道不解咬人。師云。乞兒見小利。化又打。師乃走。
北禪歲夜小參云。年窮歲盡。無可與諸人分歲。今夜烹箇露地白牛。煑野菜羮。燒榾柮火。喫了大家圍爐。唱村田樂。何也。免使倚他門戶傍他墻。致使傍人喚作郎。至夜深。維那問訊云。縣中有人勾和尚。禪云。作什麼。那云。和尚夜來殺牛。不曾納皮角。禪遂捋下帽子云。這箇不是。那拾得便出。禪喚侍者云。賊賊。那云。天寒且還和尚帽子。禪𮨇視。師云。這箇公案作麼生。師云。潭州紙貴。一狀領過。
師訪芭蕉泉庵主。問云。庵主在麼。泉云。誰。師云。行脚僧。泉云。來作什麼。師云。禮拜庵主。泉云。恰遇庵主不在。師云。你𠰚。泉云。向道不在。說什麼你我。拽棒直赶下山。明朝再去。依前被赶。師後又去問。庵主在麼。泉云。誰。師云。行脚僧。揭簾便入。泉攔曾把住云。這裏蟲虎縱橫。尿床鬼子。三回兩度來。討箇什麼。師云。久嚮道風。泉乃解開衣抖擻云。你將謂泉大道有多少奇特。師便問。如何是庵中主。泉云。入門須辨取。師云。莫只者便是。泉云。賺殺幾多人。師云。前言何在。泉云。聽事不真。喚鐘作瓮。師云。與麼則萬法泯時全體現。君臣合處正中邪去也。泉云。驢漢不會便休。亂統作什麼。師云。未審客來將何祗待。泉云。雲門胡餅趙州茶。師云。與麼則謝師供養。泉云。我火種也未有。早道謝供養。
