The Chronicle of Mount Potalaka was compiled by Sheng Ximing during the Yuan dynasty and completed in the fourteenth century. This work centers on the Buddhist sacred site of Mount Potalaka (present-day Putuo Mountain), documenting its geography, legends, and manifestations of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), blending historical and religious narratives. Its contents encompass the origin of the mountain's name, the evolution of its monasteries, accounts of eminent monks, and miraculous occurrences experienced by pilgrims, reflecting the exchange between Han and Tibetan Buddhism during the Yuan period and the prevalence of Avalokiteśvara devotion. As an early specialized record of Putuo Mountain, this chronicle serves as an important textual source for the study of Chinese Buddhist mountain culture, the formation of Avalokiteśvara's sacred site, and Yuan dynasty Buddhist history, possessing significant historical and religious value.
