Tisiyi Sutra
To interpret the meaning by clinging to the sutras is to wrong the Buddhas of the three times. To stray from the sutras by even a single word is to speak like a demon. “This won’t do, that won’t do.” Tell me, how can we get the message? After a long pause, he said: Fragrance comes from flowers, Water flows from rocks.
The Master called the assembly together and said, "The great teacher Yunmen has arrived. What has he told you all? He said that just last night, the fly whisk transformed into a dragon and swallowed the entire universe! Where, then, do you seek to dwell? Do you understand? If not, let me share a small clue on his behalf."
After a long pause, he said: "If the lotus leaves stir without wind, surely there must be fish moving beneath."
Everyone, do you see it? Shakyamuni Buddha is sitting on a jeweled lotus throne atop this old monk’s whisk, turning the great wheel of the Dharma and teaching the various names, powers, and functions of light. Those with sharp faculties and keen insight, upon seeing this, instantly realize their own mind and attain Buddhahood right on the spot. But for those of medium or lesser capacity, don’t think this old monk is just telling dreams along with everyone else.
Last night, a clay ox plowed through the moon. A Persian glares with anguished eyes, rage never spent. A stone man claps his hands and laughs. A wooden woman, stunned and panicked, weeps tears of blood. So tell me—what principle is this? I don’t know myself. I simply bring it up to fit the moment. And what is the “fitting the moment” phrase? Drunk in the summer breeze, a guest at West Lake— Do not mistake Hangzhou for Bianzhou.
Gentle sunlight spreads across the imperial garden in spring. Grass turns green, willow buds begin to sprout. If you want to recognize your true original nature— The east wind makes all wandering visitors drunk.
Everyone, the mountain monk has brought this up. I only intended it as an inscription for the mountain gate. If you discuss it as Buddhist teaching, I'll smash your head with thirty strikes— and you cannot blame me for it.
Take it up directly—that's still being dull and stuck. As for "how?" and "what's the use?"—what good are they? If you can grasp it before I, this mountain monk, have even left the Dharma hall, before a single thought has arisen in anyone—that's a little closer. But if not, then listen to the Sutra of Beneficial Thought.
A scholar burns the midnight oil over his books; a farmer plows his fields in the rain. Though one toils in leisure and the other in labor, both are engaging in dedicated effort. Consider the monastics, who rely on the Buddha’s light—they neither farm for food nor weave for clothing. In the end, what have they accomplished? Do they know the true meaning of “repaying kindness”? After a long pause, he said: “The rain nourishes the lush growth of the three grasses; everywhere, songs of peace and prosperity are sung.”
Oh, this old monk is truly useless. My movements lack freedom, my missing teeth can’t stop the wind. My mind is straightforward, and my speech is blunt. Last night, I toppled Mount Sumeru itself, breaking off half of Lord Indra’s jeweled throne and celestial couch. Everyone, now tell me—what principle lies behind this old monk’s words?
*Long pause*
I also don’t know what principle it is. It’s just like the people of the Three Rivers singing a song.
Ah! How wondrous! A sound of pure joy — I cannot lift this one move. But when I put it down, I am utterly free and alive with happiness.
Last night, the Bodhisattva Guanyin transformed into a demon, and King Yama transformed into a bodhisattva. Now tell me: why would this happen? Have you not heard it said: the kind-hearted have no wicked thoughts, the wicked have no wholesome intentions. Good and evil do not meet — they are like steps taken one after the other.
If you can realize this right here, you will be clear and free, unhindered and luminous. But if you don't yet understand, then listen to what follows.
