### 師示眾云。天童和尚頌臺山婆子。可謂只解推倒。不會扶起。乃作三頌

> The Master addressed the assembly, saying: "Reverend Tiantong's verse about the Old Woman of Mount Tai can only be described as knowing

趙州婆子。作用通天。用而不用。談而不談。聖莫能測。鬼莫能宣。便是諸佛。口掛壁間。且道何以如此。若知燈是火。拍手哭蒼天。

> Elder Zhao Zhou's old woman, Her actions reach the heavens. Using, yet not using; Speaking, yet not speaking. Sages cannot fathom it, Ghosts cannot declare it. Even all the Buddhas, Hang their mouths upon the wall. But tell me, why is this so? If you know that a lamp is fire, Clap your hands and weep to the sky.

同道方知路坦夷。莫教脚下意遲疑。欲從舌底求消息。辜負先賢不借機。

> Those who walk the same path know the road is smooth. Do not let your feet hesitate. If you seek the truth from others' words, You betray the ancient masters who need no such aids.

是賊識賊。當行識行。傍觀者哂。知味者甜。臺山路直。何用商量。欲問如何。北斗南看。

> A thief knows a thief. One who practices knows the path. Bystanders smirk, but those who taste know its sweetness. The road to Mount Tai is straight— why discuss it further? If you ask, "What is it?" Look south to the Northern Dipper.
