Please teach me a peaceful and happy teaching." Dajue said, "This blind fellow comes here to confess his defeat." He took off his robe and beat Xinghua severely. At that moment, Xinghua realized the principle behind why his late teacher Linji was beaten by Huangbo. I ask, what is the principle of these three severe beatings? The master said, "You touch it but feel no pain." Question: When Xuefeng saw a monk coming, he pushed the door open with both hands, stepped out and said, "What is this?" The monk said, "What is this?" Xuefeng lowered his head and returned to his hut. The monk went to Yantou for the summer retreat and asked him about it. Yantou said, "Xuefeng and I were born from the same lineage but will not die in the same way. If you want to know the final saying, it is just this." Shoukuo bowed, then said, "Everyone, watch this old fellow's defeat!" He shouted again, clapped his hands, and returned to the assembly. Where did Huayan's defeat lie? The master said, "Using a ladle to divine, listening to empty voices. Where is the earlier word?" Question: Shoukuo went to Lumen. He saw Chu talking with a monk. Lumen asked Chu, "Why are you all draped and disheveled all day?" Chu said, "Do you see me as draped and disheveled, sir?" Lumen shouted. Chu also shouted. They both stopped. Shoukuo said, "Look at these two blind men!" He then shouted. Lumen returned to his quarters and called Shoukuo. He asked, "Just now, when I and Reverend Chu interacted as host and guest, where was my flaw?" Shoukuo said, "That only shows your illness is deeper." Lumen said, "Ever since I saw Xinghua, I've understood." Shoukuo said, "When you visited Xinghua, I was his attendant. I remember the words exchanged then." Lumen said, "Please repeat them." Shoukuo then recounted: Xinghua asked you, "Where have you come from?" You said, "Mount Wutai." He asked, "Did you see Manjusri?" You shouted. He said, "I'm asking if you saw Manjusri—why do you lose your temper?" You shouted again. Xinghua was silent. You bowed. The next day, he sent me to call you, but you had already left. Xinghua came to the hall and said, "Look at this fellow, carrying a broken rope, heading south. Later, he'll say he saw Xinghua." Shoukuo said, "This case today is just like that one." Lumen asked, "Why was Xinghua silent then?" Shoukuo said, "He saw that you didn't understand the host-guest teaching, so he said nothing. When he wanted to call you to discuss it, you had already left." Lumen then personally brewed tea and told the assembly, "All you dragon-elephants studying Zen must be careful." What is the "broken rope"? What is "not understanding the host-guest point"? The master said, "Where the ram hides its horns, the hunter tires in vain." If you can answer it, fine. But if you cannot, don’t say I am preaching the doctrine. The sutra says: ‘If you see me through form, or seek me through sound, you are practicing a deviant path and cannot see the Tathagata.’ Just now, when you saw me preaching the doctrine, do you consider it preaching the doctrine through speech and words? Or through raising the hammer and holding up the whisk? If through speech and words, then you seek the Tathagata through sound. If through raising the hammer and holding up the whisk, then you see the Tathagata through form. If you see the Tathagata in either of these two ways, then you are on a deviant path. Apart from these two, where do you see me preaching the doctrine?" The senior monk could not respond. Another monk said: "Please, Venerable, speak a word in his place." The Master slowly entered the Chan hall. The crowd said: "It turns out he only learned how to ask questions—he can’t answer either." The Western Hall Master said: "He has already answered you."
