> Reply to Assistant Magistrate Zhang

> You have said: "Before the Buddha existed, there was this person." This statement, though plausible, may not fully capture the truth. Have you not heard that sacred names and common titles are merely empty sounds, and that various forms and humble appearances are all illusory shapes? It is also said: "When using the stick and the shout, it is like wielding a sword without emotion to cut through right and wrong." This sounds right, but it is not the whole truth—one cannot discuss military strategy from a safe distance. Consider now: your wife is ill, and you say that this burden is inescapable. Is this not the same as Deshan's stick and Linji's shout? When you are in such a situation, how do you cut through it? Furthermore, in daily life, right and wrong are always present, and everything is Deshan and Linji. You must see this clearly; do not just speak and then stop. I earnestly urge you again and again.
