> A Reply to Layman Chen Luting

> Having read your letter, I can see that your effort is not superficial like most people’s. Yet this matter is extremely simple—it’s right here in your daily life, at every arising thought and stirring mind. But if you try to grasp it, it suddenly seems a thousand mountains away. Unless you have truly sweated once in genuine realization, trying to escape birth and death will likely be impossible. Why? Because this is a realm beyond thought and discussion. The slightest conceptual pondering, and it’s already lost. The fault lies in the person themselves: they don’t value true insight but want to piece things together with words, hoping to understand it easily. Not realizing that this very “easiness” is a major sickness. If you truly awaken, all distinctions and causal conditions melt like ice in that very moment, with no further doubt or hindrance. It’s like when Yanyan found his head—his madness and terror vanished instantly. Where would there be room for any more confusion? If you still need to ask someone, “Is this my head or not my head?” then your madness has simply not quieted yet. From this we can infer, let me ask you: apart from this single verse, have all the other koan cases become clear and free of doubt? Towards the matter of birth and death, have you found release? If not, then this verse cannot be truly grasped. I am ignorant and humble, daring to speak so bluntly. I trust that you, a person of insight, will not take offense.
