### 為瀾日華侍者舉火

> Kindling the Fire for Attendant Rihua of Lan

祇望曾參養曾晢。誰知顏路泣顏淵。他日音書報慈母。哭聲兒子呌聲天。華侍者。聽我宣。若欲脚下承當。須悟父母生前。大眾。父母生前即且置。只如四大敗壞後。你一靈真性向什麼處安身立命。還會麼。若也不會。須得山僧痛下毒手。與汝槌桚。不比臨濟棒。德山喝。直下要與諸方別。提起一把無明火。燒得髑髏頂門裂。頂門裂。露出當先那一著。擲火把云。猶如大夢獲醒時。心縱精明向誰說。

> All we hoped was that Zeng Shen would care for Zeng Xi, Yet who expected Yan Lu would weep for Yan Yuan? One day, a letter home will tell a mother’s grief, A son’s cries, a shout to Heaven. Attendant Hua, hear my proclamation: If you wish to take hold beneath your very feet, You must awaken to what exists before your parents were born. Good assembly, setting aside “before your parents were born,” Just consider this: when the four great elements have decayed and scattered, Where will your one true spiritual nature find a home and place to settle? Do you understand? If you do not, I, this mountain monk, must strike ruthlessly With an iron hammer— Not like Linji’s staff or Deshan’s shout. I aim to make all schools recognize a difference here and now: I lift up a torch of the fire of ignorance, Burning until your skull’s crown splits open! When the crown splits open, What was truly present from the very start is revealed. (Throws down the torch.) It is like waking from a great dream— Though the mind is clear and sharp, To whom can it be spoken?
