### 濟溺記

> Deliverance from Drowning

人之難遠者好色。亦復難行者仁義也。古曰如好好色。是知好色者不易易言其遠離矣。而又安知有過者焉。甞聞光祿顏君客吳門。有程氏二女。為仲姬所逼。欲自溺。舟子得之以售。商人。商人將轉鬻於妓。顏君怒曰。良家女敢爾耶。遂白巡司。程覺欲贖以歸。二女有難色。顏君卒然憫念。乃云。本欲活之。反致死地。是豈得計耶。遂捐金以贖。此人所難能者一也。當其艾年。同載以歸。而心不迷亂。人所難能者二也。倍與奩資擇婿以嫁。人所難能者三也。人有三難。君得并之。不期仁義而仁義著焉。寧不為丈夫所為。皆出人一頭地非耶。余遊歷諸省。未見好德濟艱者若顏君矣。惡世荒淫。能凜然卓然。屈指曾有幾人乎。故余筆記。永貽云爾。

> What people find hardest to stay away from is sensual desire, and what they find hardest to practice is humanity and righteousness. The ancients said, "One loves beauty as naturally as one loves a beautiful woman." From this we know that sensual desire is not easily renounced—it is truly difficult to speak of turning away from it. Moreover, how many are aware of those who go beyond it? I once heard of Minister Yan, who was a guest in the Wu region. There were two daughters of the Cheng family, who were forced by a concubine named Zhong Ji and attempted to drown themselves. A boatman rescued them and sold them to a merchant, who intended to resell them to a brothel. Minister Yan was outraged and said, "How dare you treat women from a respectable family like this?" He then reported it to the patrol officer. When the Cheng family found out, they tried to buy the daughters back, but the two women showed reluctance. Seeing this, Minister Yan felt compassion and said, "My original intention was to save them; if they end up dead instead, that would not be a good outcome." So he paid the ransom himself. This is the first of his admirable deeds. At the prime of their youth, he traveled with them back home without any disturbance of mind—this is the second admirable deed. He then doubled their dowry and found them worthy husbands to marry—this is the third admirable deed. Most people find these three things difficult, yet Minister Yan achieved them all. Without intending to be humane or righteous, humanity and righteousness shone through in his actions. Is this not truly being a man of exceptional character, standing head and shoulders above others? I have traveled through many provinces and have yet to see anyone who esteems virtue and helps the distressed as Minister Yan does. In this wicked and decadent world, how many can remain upright and outstanding? Therefore, I record this story to be remembered forever.
