> Longju Nunnery Universal Stupa Inscription

> Zhuangzi once said that the world has nothing hidden, merely presenting conditions of form. Master Zhao understood that the four elements are inherently empty, separately revealing the body. Though each philosophy has its merits, none surpass Yunju’s saying: "Green mountains are limited; white bones are endless. My life does not depart from the community; how could death make us different?" Thus, he built a common pagoda to house teachers and friends from the ten directions—not only fusing body and environment into one, but also ensuring birth and death never truly separate. This is the one who truly grasped the Buddha’s mind. Therefore, temples everywhere followed his model. Now, east of Gāo Tíng Mountain, below Yellow Crane Peak, stood an ancient Yongqing Temple, destroyed in warfare of the Yuan dynasty; its foundation had fallen into private hands. The venerable Yìlián Shèn sought and recovered this land, then consulted with Master Wengǔ Yìn. Together with local people, they devised a plan to convert the site into a hermitage, naming it Dragon Retreat—meaning a place where dragons and elephants dwell together. Venerable Shèn passed away before fulfilling his vow, but charged his disciples: "This hermitage shall be shared with the ten directions; choose a virtuous master to lead it—do not let it pass in hereditary succession." So the community chose a Master Jiāngxiāng to take over his work, expanding and fulfilling Venerable Shèn’s legacy. The hermitage was renovated inside and out, solemn in appearance; members numbered over a hundred, surpassing other monasteries. Below the eastern ridge, three common pagodas were built: one for the monastery’s own lineage, one for wandering practitioners from the ten directions, and one for laymen. This ensures birth and death are not separate, close and distant are not confused—truly embodying the Buddhas’ and patriarchs’ original intention. When I returned from Shandong, Master Jiāngxiāng welcomed me to Dragon Retreat. With sincere earnestness, he repeatedly asked me to compose an inscription. Thus I record these events and write the following eulogy: Emptiness arises from great awakening; Great awakening depends on the body. Body depends on the environment; Environment depends on emptiness. Each does not reach the other, Yet they interpenetrate. Originally no birth or death— How could there be beginning or end? Dharma-nature is just so; Principle and phenomena merge. Due to delusion about true nature, We form these false discriminations: The five elements overcome each other, Distinguishing same and different— Like bubbles on water, Becoming large or small as conditions form. When bubbles dissolve back into water, They are neither one nor two. If regarding the form-body, Self and other obscure each other. Only the wise person Understands dharmas thus: Seeing the common ground in differences, They enter the unborn ground.
