### 趙州語錄序

> Preface to the Recorded Sayings of Master Zhaozhou

竊惟破家蕩產。於十八上而善舞太阿。縱賓奪主於聖賢前而逢場作戲。一物不將來。直教放下著。不起一念時。向道須彌山。鎮州蘿蔔頭。諸方謾云。即是師承。青州布衫子。學者休向。言中取實。拈一莖艸而作丈六金身。惟一個齒而盡知滋味。時常老實頭殺活臨機。頓超他用棒用喝。三寸綿軟舌。縱橫自在。未甞用怪語奇辭。其猶水上按葫蘆。看他東捺西轉。室中懸寶鏡。任教凡來聖來。南泉之真子。馬祖之嫡孫。拈提向上宗乘。善解拖泥帶水。其惟趙州一人而已。惜其語不能盡傳。僅獲一帙。學者如逢至寶。真如甞御鼎一臠而盡知眾味。飲大海一滴而備諳百川。但舊刻不佳。亦且板殘字滅。今發心重刻。利益將來。深恰老朽之心。聊題數語以冠篇首云爾。

> I reflect that breaking up the family fortune and dancing the great sword at eighteen, seizing the host and usurping the guest in the presence of sages, playing along on stage—such is his way. Bringing not a single thing, he insists you put it down; the moment no thought arises, he says, "Go ask Mount Sumeru." Zhenzhou’s turnip head—these are casually tossed about by all quarters as if they were the true transmission. Qingzhou’s linen shirt—stop seeking reality in words, students. Plucking a single blade of grass, he shapes it into a sixteen-foot golden body; by one tooth alone, he knows the full flavor. Always honest at the core, he kills and brings to life as the occasion demands, instantly surpassing those who wield sticks and shouts. With his three-inch soft tongue, he roams freely, never resorting to strange expressions or bizarre words. He is like a gourd pressed under water—watch it bob east and west. The room holds a hanging mirror, ready for whenever sages or ordinary beings come. Truly, he is the legitimate child of Nanquan and the direct descendant of Mazu. Lifting up the ultimate tradition, he skillfully wades through mud and water, and only one person can do this—Zhaozhou. What a pity that his words cannot be fully transmitted. Only one volume survives. Students treat it like a precious gem upon finding it—like tasting a single morsel from the imperial tripod and knowing the flavors of all dishes, or drinking a drop from the great sea and tasting every river. But the old edition is poorly printed, with worn-out characters. Now I am resolved to reprint it, to benefit future generations. This deeply aligns with my wishes. I jotted down these few words as a preface.
