> Preface to the Patriarch's Origins

> Each tradition honors its own patriarch. The various schools attack one another more fiercely than fire and water. Yet in the Patriarch Hall, only Bodhidharma is enshrined, while the founding teachers of the doctrinal schools are excluded—this seems to forget the roots. Some say, "It’s not about forgetting roots. Bodhidharma represents an unbroken lineage of transmission, whereas the doctrinal founders are too vast and unfounded. So we only set up Bodhidharma." This argument is not entirely correct. If it weren’t for the earlier arrival of Kasyapa Matanga and Dharmaratna, who first brought the White Horse from the West, preached from the sky, subdued the Taoist masters of the Five Peaks, and inspired the fourfold assembly to awaken—what evidence would Bodhidharma, even as a patriarch, have had when he suddenly came to the East? Whose understanding and faith could he have gained? I know that what Bodhidharma pointed to was simply the intent of the scriptures transmitted by these two men. What else could it be? Therefore, it’s clear that these two men’s merit is second only to the Buddha’s. Yet they are not given a place of honor—that’s forgetting the roots. If we discuss it separately: the Chan school does not forget its patriarch, but the doctrinal schools forget theirs. If we discuss it together, both sides have forgotten. That’s why in previous years I set up patriarchal seats. First, I placed the Venerable Kasyapa Matanga, the first generation to transmit scriptures in the East. Second, the Venerable Bodhidharma, the first generation to propagate the essence in the East. Third, the Great Master Baizhang, who established the rules for monastic communities. Fourth, the founding abbot of this mountain. I’m uncertain whether this is correct. Humbly, I hope that venerable elders and those who value fair discussion will instruct me on this matter.
