### 心經大意序

> Preface to the Essence of the Heart Sutra

眉毛挂劍。血濺梵天。水按葫蘆。略著便轉。圓融活潑。巧發機宜。無出般若心經歟。所以非文字而即文字。何妨四六舖舒。即語言而非語言。豈礙熾然言說。故曰般若如大火聚。四面不可入。般若如清涼池。四面皆可入。非偶然之語也。經標智慧渡彼岸者。非謂菩薩更渡彼岸也。觀自在者。欲令眾生自觀自在也。以自在故。於一空中。雙遮則非空非色。非根非塵。乃至無智無得。雙炤則即色即空。不增不減。以及不滅不生。誠能如是。何苦厄之不度。涅槃之不究竟乎。友谷師。深得般若旨趣。言文之表。註釋此經。題曰大意。與旅泊居士過訪。出以示余。片時數過。不忍釋手屬余著辭。自愧識淺。何敢措語。但師為雲棲白足。叨忝同參不可無片言隻字。代資鞭影云爾。

> Eyebrows hung with a sword—blood splatters the heavens. Press a gourd underwater, and with the slightest shift, it turns. Perfectly rounded, lively and agile, skillfully revealing the spark of wisdom—none surpass the Prajñā Heart Sutra. Thus, "not words yet precisely words" freely extends in four-six prose. "Language yet not language" hardly hinders fervent speech. Therefore, it is said: "Prajñā is like a great blazing fire—none can enter from any side. Prajñā is like a clear, cool pond—all can enter from any side." These are not random words. The scripture is titled "Prajñā Pāramitā"—wisdom that reaches the other shore—not because the Bodhisattva crosses over, but because the Bodhisattva invites sentient beings to cross over themselves. Guanyin (the Perceiver of Sounds) is the one who reveals freedom. Through this freedom, within the single realm of Emptiness, the dual negation negates both emptiness and form, both senses and objects, even wisdom and attainment. The dual illumination reveals that form is precisely emptiness, neither increasing nor decreasing, neither arising nor ceasing. If one can truly realize this, how could suffering not be crossed? How could Nirvāṇa not be ultimate? Master Yougu, deeply grasping the essence of Prajñā—beyond words and letters—has commented on this sutra, titling his work "The Great Meaning." He once visited me with Layman Lubo, and showed me the text. In a brief moment, reading it over several times, I could not bear to put it down. He asked me to write a preface. But I, ashamed of my shallow understanding, dare not say much. However, since he is a pure disciple of Yunqi and a fellow practitioner, it would be remiss not to offer a few words as a subtle spur for the path.
