> Preface to the Nirvana Sutra Commentary

> The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra contains the final instructions of the Tathāgata. For countless eons, it remained hidden and unspoken, a teaching of skillful means, waiting for the right moment to be revealed. Thus, the teachings were presented through pairs of opposites—great and small, provisional and complete—from sudden to gradual, partial to perfect, from the first stage to the last. Only this profound doctrine, the ultimate discourse, was held back like a precious treasure kept in a storehouse, given only at the end of life. Like a priceless jewel in the ocean, it vanishes when the kalpa comes to an end. How great is the World-Honored One! His compassion is beyond compare. He spared no effort, exhausted his strength, and worked equally to rescue all beings sinking in suffering. For forty-nine years he waited for the right opportunity, yet his original intention remained unfulfilled. Finally, on the fifteenth day of the second month, as he entered nirvāṇa, he poured out his heart completely. As a result, followers of ten external paths took refuge, and even those without faith (icchantikas) awakened. Insects, plants, and trees all received his grace; elephants, horses, snakes, and vipers were all blessed. Ordinary beings within and without meditation surpassed countless eons of cultivation, while gods and humans alike attained the fruit of birthless realization. His work done, he announced his nirvāṇa. Then the sun and moon dimmed, the forests turned white, the earth shook, and birds and beasts wailed in grief. Both ordinary and saintly beings lost their guide. For all that is sentient and insentient, who did not weep? This sūtra, once proclaimed, left nothing more to be said. It is complete, ultimate—nothing can surpass it. The old version of this sūtra had forty rolls, with cumbersome and redundant translations. Lingyun abridged it, making the language and meaning direct and simple. Five, seven, or eight schools established different frameworks for interpreting the teachings. Guanding’s commentary was detailed and precise, but each had its merits and flaws. Thus, I took up the task of re-examining the ultimate truth and writing a commentary on this profound text. Sadly, due to the chaos of war during the Chen and Sui dynasties, the commentary was never paired with the sūtra. They were separated like Wu and Yue, enemies apart. Moreover, it has long been hidden in the canon, rarely studied by scholars. In these decadent times, people have grown weary of the supreme path, causing the Dharma-eye to be stained and the sun of the Buddha to be buried. Alas! What sorrow! What pain! Truly, it wounds the heart. Therefore, setting aside my own ignorance and foolishness, I dared to learn from the example of others. I felt a resolve to master this sūtra, and for many days, I poured over it repeatedly, gradually grasping its basic tenets and approach. But the meaning was profound and the words deep—like Guo Xiang rearranging the Zhuangzi, I struggled with the complicated order and often lost my way like looking for a lost sheep. Undeterred by the sin of opposing the faithless or the fault of slandering the Dharma, I cut away the superfluous and recorded the essential. Whether this brings merit or offense, I bow in repentance.
