### 無趣禪師語錄序

> Preface to the Record of Master Wuqu

夫祖道不可絕繼。風穴於法堂痛哭。克家之子難得。仰山自記再來。莫不以諸佛慧命為懷。度生為急務者也。所以獅子有罹難之憂。預傳法髓。達磨忍服毒之苦。得嗣方休。是皆深體祖佛授受之志矣。惟無趣老人。幼專魯誥。壯博禪宗。道聞雞聲而悟。學得野老傳心開托臨濟棒喝之宗。光揚馬祖磨磚之用。慈悲密用。權實並施。承接從上正源流。成就克家真師子。實為人天大樹。末世津梁。寧不為仰山再來之儔乎。某自恨生此象季。不遇至人。每嘆前朝豪盛。近代絕聞茲得南明禪者。持老人語錄相示。不覺忻喜。何期濁世。遇此希聲。片言隻字。盡吐諸佛肝腸。豎拂拈槌極唱諸祖骨髓。開卷則疑惑潛消。再玩則勇猛頓發。實為明時之盛典。釋氏之法幢。將來學者。體而行之。非惟己事可辦。抑且佛祖之慧命有望矣。

> The Patriarch’s Way cannot be severed. Fengxue wept loudly in the Dharma hall, for a true heir is hard to find. Yangshan recorded his own return, never forgetting the wisdom-life of the Buddhas and the urgent task of liberating beings. Thus, the Lion, troubled by calamity, transmitted the Dharma marrow in advance; Bodhidharma endured the bitterness of poison and only rested after finding his heir. All these deeply embody the resolve of the Patriarchs and Buddhas to pass on the teaching. Only the Elder Wuxu, who in youth devoted himself to Confucian classics, broadened his learning in Chan Buddhism. He awakened upon hearing a rooster’s crow; he attained realization through an old rustic, unfolding the Linji school’s shouts and blows, and glorifying Mazu’s use of polishing bricks. With compassion and hidden skill, he employed both expedient and true means, inheriting the authentic source-stream. He became a true Lion worthy of his lineage—truly a great tree for gods and humans, a ferry for the final age. Could he not be likened to Yangshan returned? I lament that I was born in this decadent age and have yet to meet such an enlightened one. I often sigh that the flourishing of former dynasties is rare in modern times. Then I received Nanming Chan Master’s presentation of the Elder’s recorded sayings—my joy was unbounded! Could I have expected in this turbid world to encounter such a rare sound? Every word and phrase fully reveals the Buddhas’ heart. Raising the whisk or striking the staff, they thoroughly sing the marrow of the Patriarchs. Opening the scroll, doubts and confusions vanish; reading again, courage springs forth. It is a splendid scripture for our era, a Dharma banner for Buddhism. Future students who embody and practice it will not only accomplish their own tasks but also give hope to the Buddha-Patriarchs’ wisdom-life.
