### 車溪禪師語錄序

> Preface to Master Chexi's Recorded Sayings

聞夫一光東亘。五葉花開。密運羣機。千差兢入。所以諸方各宗其宗。門風自是不同。共學所學。知見曾何有二。車溪禪師。乃臨濟直下兒孫。實無趣克家之子。默籌七事。妙協三玄。播黃檗吐舌之風。顯高安𡎺拳之用。掌殺活機。權衡學者。秉吹毛劍。勘驗諸方。遐邇咸推獨步。古今屈指一人。苟非承夙願之再來。寧不為多生之根熟耶。某生不遇時。學無所附。福輕罪重。不能面稟嘉猷。道聽途傳。歲月徒增渴想。茲因南明禪者。持錄相示。焚香頂讀。自覺潛神。再玩淵微。初心頗愜。何期不出蝸居而聞所未聞。生逢斯世而遇此難遇。如展智囊。始知己見之󳬿朧。似入大海。方信江河之狹淺。自慚無德。莫可讚揚。略敘數辭。聊申翹致。

> I hear that once a single light shone eastward, the five-petaled flower bloomed, subtly guiding all beings, and the myriad differences entered harmoniously. Thus, various traditions each uphold their own lineage, and their gate-styles are naturally distinct. Yet, what they all learn and realize—their knowledge and insight—has never been two. The Chan master Chexi, a direct descendant of Linji, truly carries on the legacy of the Wuzu family. In silence, he contemplated seven matters, skillfully harmonizing with the Three Profoundnesses. He spread the wind of Huangbo’s tongue’s revelation and manifested the great power of Gao’an’s striking fist. He wielded the authority of life and death, weighing the capacities of practitioners. He held the sword that cuts through illusions, examining all quarters. Far and near, he was universally acknowledged as unrivalled; from ancient to present times, he stands alone. If he were not a reincarnation born of a past vow, how could he be the ripened fruit of many lifetimes? I was born at an inopportune time and have no proper foundation for learning. My blessings are slight and my offenses heavy, so I could not receive his excellent guidance in person. I have only heard scraps along the way, and my thirst for wisdom grows with each passing day. Now, thanks to the Chan practitioner Nanming, who showed me this written record, I burn incense, bow, and read it reverently. My mind calms naturally. As I delve into its profound subtleties, my beginner’s heart finds deep satisfaction. How unexpected—without leaving my humble dwelling, I have heard what I never heard before! Born in this age, I have encountered what is so hard to encounter. It is like opening a treasury of wisdom; I now realize the haziness of my past views. It is like stepping into the great ocean; now I truly believe how shallow rivers and streams are. Feeling my own lack of virtue, I cannot adequately praise this work. I briefly express a few words, merely to convey my deepest respect.
