> Postscript to the Re-engraved Avatamsaka Sutra

> A single leaf falls, and the world knows autumn. Without a word, trust is given. Once the sun returns, the great earth welcomes spring. Without a command, all things follow. Therefore, the boundless can be one, like a hundred rivers flowing into the great sea. And the one can be boundless, like the bright moon's reflection in a thousand waters. Perfect harmony, free and effortless, beyond the reach of thought—this is the Great and Vast Flower Adornment Sutra of the Buddha. In this Sutra, the Thus-Come One reveals that all beings possess their own true nature, complete and sufficient in daily life, not something to be attained through cultivation. Yet beings, shrouded by ignorance, are lost and turn away from their own minds. Thus, at the moment of his enlightenment, he said, “How wondrous! All beings are endowed with the wisdom and virtues of the Thus-Come One. It is merely because of delusions and attachments that they fail to realize it.” Therefore, in the Avatamsaka, he instantly and directly reveals the One Vehicle’s all-encompassing teaching, points directly to the Dharma Realm, and unfolds the principle that ordinary beings and sages are non-dual. Purity and defilement interpenetrate without omission; layer upon layer reflects each other, like the overlapping radiance of Indra’s net. Each and every one merges with the other, like the combined light of a thousand lamps. Inner and outer are unobstructed, like a mustard seed held within a jeweled vase. Large and small contain each other, like a single speck of dust containing the entire great earth. These are realms beyond conceptual thought; how could they be reached by mere intellect? I have heard that when the scripture was being translated, the heavenly boy offered incense; when it was chanted, the asura army was defeated; when a commentary was written, a golden image appeared in a dream; when a treatise was composed, teeth emitted white light. Because this Sutra is inconceivable, its benefits are likewise inconceivable. The masters Zhong’an and Helin, considering that the end-times might see this teaching lost, resolved to reprint it, hoping to ensure its far-reaching transmission. Unexpectedly, their nirvana came and they passed away midway. Now, friends like Zhao Shuangrong, Fa Wu, and others have carried on their work, dedicating themselves wholeheartedly to gather support from all directions and complete this task. This can truly be called skillfully continuing the will of their predecessors and skillfully carrying out their work. I, serving at Fucheng, have witnessed their achievement and felt admiration in my heart. Therefore, I write these few words to record their effort at the end of this volume.
