### 興善寺重修大殿舍利塔䟽

> Xingshan Temple Restoration Stupa Fund Appeal

夫佛法有三時焉。謂正法像法末法也。正法者。如來現在。面稟嘉言。一念發心。便證果也。像法者。如來滅後。碎身舍利。流布十方。造寺建塔也。末法者。稟前二法。薄興供養。而信心去古遠矣。茲者興善寺。去嘉禾東南治三十里。後周坦法師所建。法師道行精嚴。華夷所重。寺建二舍利塔。得得航海。乞二鍮石。以為其頂。至　國朝千有餘載。殿宇幾經興廢。而二塔儼然獨峙。人因異之。故興復之不難者。咸塔之力也。余於今春。過石佛主期學徒鷲蘿峰。乃房僧也。邀余登覧。見大殿狼藉二塔將圮。乃語眾曰。大殿工繁。殊難修理。今此二塔。若或不修。則塔頂毀墮。欲再復之。不亦難乎。答曰。村居荒僻。鷲等德薄。人不取信。雖欲修葺。不勝難甚。余頷之回東塔。有善人廣恩。余勸之即施十金。為發心始。倘有見聞生信。則眾手可成山也。因記本末。告諸來者。且遠方既施。而近境不可無心。凡往來隨喜者。但百十分文。隨力隨量。共成勝事。福攸歸矣。

> The Buddha's Dharma unfolds through three periods: the Age of True Dharma, the Age of Semblance Dharma, and the Age of the End of Dharma. During the Age of True Dharma, the Tathagata was alive, and those who heard his teachings directly could attain enlightenment with a single thought of sincere aspiration. During the Age of Semblance Dharma, after the Tathagata's passing, his bodily relics were distributed far and wide, and people built temples and stupas to honor him. In the present Age of End of Dharma, people only halfheartedly make offerings based on the earlier practices, and their faith feels distant from the ancient times. Now, Xingshan Temple lies thirty li southeast of the Jiahe region. It was founded by Master Tan of the Later Zhou dynasty. Master Tan's spiritual practice was pure and rigorous, revered by both Chinese and foreigners. He built two stupas for relics, even crossing the sea to obtain two brass finials for their spires. Over a thousand years have passed through successive dynasties, and though the temple halls have faced cycles of ruin and revival, these two stupas have stood alone and untouched. People marveled at this, recognizing that the stupas' presence made restoration possible. This spring, while visiting the Shifo Temple where I taught students, the monk Jiluo Peak — a monk from this temple — invited me to explore. I saw the main hall in disarray and the two stupas near collapse, so I told the others, “Repairing the main hall is a huge and difficult task. But if these two stupas are not restored now, their spires will fall, and rebuilding them later will be even harder.” They replied, “Our village is remote and poor, and our virtue is meager. People do not trust us. Even if we wished to repair them, it would be extremely difficult.” I nodded and returned to East Pagoda. There I met a kind-hearted donor named Guang En. I urged him to give, and he immediately donated ten gold pieces to start the effort. If those who see or hear this can be inspired, many hands can make light work. Thus I record the full story for future readers. Since donors from afar have contributed, those nearby should not be indifferent. Let all who pass by and wish to join in rejoicing offer whatever they can, be it just ten or a hundred coins — give according to your means and capacity. Together, we can accomplish this virtuous deed, and blessings will surely return to you.
