> An Appeal for the Construction of a Meditation Hall at the Ancient Thousand-Monk Pavilion on Mount Jing

> Buddhas do not create a Buddha, and the Dharma is not spoken by anyone—this is the eternal principle of all Buddhas and the great vow of all Bodhisattvas. After the Buddha's passing for a thousand years, the True Dharma finally arrived in this land. At that time, people focused on principles and practices, yet remained ignorant of their own mind. They clung to words and teachings, often trapping themselves like those who only follow footprints. Thus Bodhidharma traveled far, pointing directly to the human mind, saying that seeing one's true nature leads to Buddhahood. By the time of the Sixth Patriarch, this teaching flourished widely, spreading in all directions. Countless people attained its essence. Monasteries buzzed with activity. When it came to the long, continuous transmission, only our Shuangjing Monastery held the highest place under heaven. Since the founding master Guo Yi opened this mountain, eighty generations followed. Those honored by kings and nobles include figures like Huguo and Faji, who appeared one after another. Master Dahui Zonggao, revered by Emperor Gaozong, gathered a congregation of three thousand and was said to lead the entire Buddhist world in virtue. North of the great hall, a thousand-monk pavilion was built to house them. Now, in our present dynasty, the temple's orientation was changed, causing wise and capable ones to hide away. In recent years, the Boundless Master united the community in decision to restore the old orientation. Practitioners then gathered from all directions, and wise ones returned. Now, the abbot of Jifeng Monastery, along with fellow Chan practitioners, has come far to invite me into the mountains to establish a long-term retreat, gather the community in meditation—hoping to revive the way of the patriarchs. But it is difficult to revive something long abandoned overnight. With many people, there is no space to accommodate them. Therefore, the Chan practitioner Xuhan has initiated a great aspiration: to build five new Chan halls behind the thousand-monk pavilion, with additional monks' quarters. This work is immense and beyond the resources of the monks alone. Only through the generous support of great benefactors can it be accomplished. We humbly ask that you lend your spiritual strength from the moment the boundaries are marked, and the monastery will be as if already complete. As soon as you extend a hand to donate, the precious hall will be finished. Those who undertake such a great heart will not see their merit wasted. If you are willing, please simply indicate your name.
