### 徑山千佛閣募齋僧米䟽

> Mount Jing Thousand Buddha Hall: Appeal for Rice to Feed Monks

華嚴經曰。假使頂戴經塵劫。身為床座遍三千。若不傳法度眾生。畢竟無能報恩者。夫所謂報恩者。非特山僧。登曲彔木床。揮麈舉論為然。即檀那捨供。大眾輔翼。以及負勞運力者。皆名傳法也。所言報恩者。非特大士捨身。比丘成道者為然。即眾信修檀度。學忍辱。以及持戒精進。莫不皆名報恩也。猶如幻戲登場。缺一則不能成其戲矣。邇來末世諸方。教乘頗演。直旨尠聞。惟雙徑國一開山。相傳八十代。代不乏人。自月林禪師歸寂之後。經百有十載。宗風堙沒。智者泣途。里境相傳。謂寺改其向。以致寥落。近得髻峰廓菴二上人。僉同眾議。復其初向。自戊申創起。今始落成。於是四海英賢爭赴。稍覩舊規。可謂弘法報恩。兩兼其美矣。奈因眾廣。日給難敷。特持短䟽。徧告十方。惟冀體同體之仁。秉護法之念。捨庫藏中。有餘貫粟。成出世間無盡福田。實為福慧兩全。共成勝事。謹䟽。

> The Avatamsaka Sutra says: "Even if one were to carry the scriptures atop one's head for countless eons, or offer one's body as a seat for all beings throughout the universe, if one does not transmit the Dharma to liberate sentient beings, they will ultimately be unable to repay the kindness they have received." What is meant by "repaying kindness"? It’s not just the mountain monk sitting on a carved wooden chair, waving a whisk while giving lectures. The lay donors offering alms, the community assisting, and even those who lend their labor and strength—all are also transmitting the Dharma. What is meant by "repaying kindness"? It’s not just bodhisattvas sacrificing themselves or monks attaining enlightenment. The faithful practicing generosity, cultivating patience, upholding precepts, and diligently advancing—all of these are forms of repaying kindness, without exception. It’s like putting on a play: if even one character is missing, the performance cannot succeed. In recent times, during this declining age, various regions still propagate the teachings of the scriptures, but true direct guidance is rarely heard. Only at Twin Peaks Monastery, founded by National Master Guoyi, has the lineage been passed down through eighty generations without interruption. However, ever since Chan Master Yuelin passed away over a century ago, the school’s tradition has faded, and wise practitioners weep at the crossroads. Local tradition says the temple fell into decline because its orientation was changed. Recently, two venerable monks, Master Jifeng and Master Kuoan, joined the community in discussing the matter and decided to restore the original orientation. Construction began in 1668 and has just been completed. As a result, talented people from across the land are rushing to gather here, and we are beginning to see a glimpse of the old glory. This can truly be described as "spreading the Dharma and repaying kindness"—two merits combined into one. However, with so many people, it’s difficult to provide for daily needs. I now hold this short appeal to announce to all directions. I only hope you will embody the compassion that sees all beings as one body, uphold the intent to protect the Dharma, and donate some of the surplus coins or grain from your storehouses. This will create an inexhaustible field of blessings in this world—truly fulfilling both merit and wisdom, and together achieving this excellent endeavor. Respectfully submitted.
