> Rebuilding the Great Hall of King Ashoka: A Fundraising Appeal

> Blessings arise from causal conditions, and their outcome depends on the circumstances. The circumstances, in turn, are shaped by people. This is a truth that has held true throughout history. Therefore, for blessings to flourish, the conditions must be excellent; when a place is extraordinary, the people there become inspired. Most noble is the temple of King Ashoka—the sacred being of heavenly realms. Its land is renowned for its auspiciousness. Combining both these excellences, it stands supreme across the world—truly a place of supreme merit and spiritual power. Now, King Ashoka was once a young boy. Seeing the Buddha enter Parinirvāṇa, he gathered stones to build a pagoda as an offering. The Buddha then prophesied, "In a hundred years, this boy will become a Wheel-turning King and will greatly promote my teachings." Indeed, the prophecy came true. Ashoka obtained one-eighth of the Buddha's relics. He crushed the Seven Treasures to build 84,000 pagodas and dispatched celestial beings to deliver them across the four continents. Eight auspicious lands were designated for their placement. Thus, within the realm of Great Ming, there are nineteen such sites—this temple is one of them. Other pagodas hold relics hidden within, but here, the relics are preserved outside the pagoda, so all can behold them directly with their own eyes. As for Liu Sahe—he was a hunter from Western Sichuan. After his death, he descended into the underworld. King Yama declared, "You are actually the Bodhisattva Jizang. How could you commit such heinous deeds? You deserve to fall into hell. Out of compassion, I will show you the way to eliminate your sins. If you can seek and see the relics, your transgressions may be cleansed." Consequently, Liu was revived and returned to the world. For twelve years, he practiced reverent prostration. Eventually, at Maoshan in Yongdong, celestial music resounded melodiously for seven days without cease, and the relics emerged from the earth. Not only were his sins eradicated, but he also attained enlightenment in this very life, becoming the National Teacher Huidā. In the early days of the present dynasty, the relics were taken three times—and three times they flew back. Thus, I know for certain that this land is indeed one of the eight auspicious places. However, as years have passed, the main hall has fallen into disrepair. Therefore, I have made a vow to undertake its restoration. To that end, I now issue this brief appeal, widely informing the faithful donors, great benefactors, and all good-hearted men and women: let each of you generate sincere faith, and together we will accomplish this excellent undertaking. As the saying goes, "When many hands move a mountain, it is not difficult to achieve; but one person lifting the sky—how could that ever be possible?" This is my petition.
