> Passing by Fan Yuting's Separate Lodge

> His walking staff in hand, he strolls beyond the eastern wall. At high noon the market breeze begins to blow. Where is Lord Fan's retreat? A man points to the east, Beyond the limpid stream. Brilliant hibiscus blooms reflect on both riverbanks. Hedge bamboo thickets cover hidden paths. Golden chrysanthemums flourish, bearing frost-tipped flowers. Lotus and water chestnuts wither, autumn stalks grown thin. Turning into the garden pavilion, his heart expands with ease – A hermit's home deep in the cavernous realm. The encircling mountains, arrayed tall, require no adornment. Peaks layered, cliffs towering – all straight and crooked as they are. Winding path leading step by step, he climbs the high tower. From open height his weary eyes and heart expand. A thousand patchwork fields – white egrets take flight. Yao Stream winds, golden in the clear flowing river. A sage of utmost insight can find this fine landscape – How could Crouching Dragon or Gold Valley be its equal? Each scene could be a painting. Every village sends up gentle plumes of smoke. Gold-grained autumn wind shakes trees along the mountain slope Clad wholly in sturdy pines and fresh bamboo. Sweet strains arise – far surpassing heaven's music: Great notes drone low, small notes cry high. Our host adores wine but can't be bothered with cups. He swallows wine from jars, getting drunk as mud. Cups and plates scattered, spits from three stoves fired by fate, He sprawls reclining by a stone bed, legs spread like an open winnow. Sunset fades westward – time to look for home. He shuffles along, using his staff for both feeble hands. Passersby mock him: "Why so arrogant and wild?" He retorts: "You people, not waking – I laugh at you!"
