> "Intending to Return: A Song of Coming Home"

> Come home—come home! For countless ages, where could we find refuge? How I grieve that from the very beginning, we failed to awaken, And lost the guidance of virtuous friends: We mistook the physical body for the self, And clung to this phantom world as a peaceful dwelling. Thus, we drifted through birth and death in vain, Enduring reincarnation without meaning. Indulging greed and anger, we created karma, Chasing fame and profit in empty pursuit. If only we realized that glory and wealth are but illusions— We would abandon the court and return home early. But not yet understanding that body and life are unreal, We remain bound by spouse and children. Though we might find ease in careless freedom, Enjoying the fields and gardens for pleasure and play— Suddenly, impermanence arrives; Years and months press on. Our temples become covered with frost and snow, Our bodies gradually wither and decay. Unaware that the Five Aggregates slip away before us, How can we recognize the Four Elements dissolving? Our karmic consciousness rushes on in chaos— Nothing within us can be grasped to hold on to. The road to the underworld stretches vast and dim— Where can we find a place to rest? Though we have wealth at home, can we take it along? Though our children are filial, what can they do for us now? Karma follows us, and we ourselves bear its fruit; The soul departs alone, forlorn and desolate. Why then do we not awaken in advance, And urgently turn our minds to take refuge? Awaken to the True Suchness that never changes— Then how can body and life ever bind us? Recognize that the deluded mind has no true existence; Understand that the dream world is fundamentally empty. Realize the Dharma Realm is all equal— How could there be any gap between ordinary and sacred? See that true nature is unborn— How could self and other ever differ? Neither coming nor going—Nirvana is precisely samsara. Neither defiled nor pure—Why then are afflictions not enlightenment? Thus, it is like the shadow cast by a water-lily flower. Coming home is like the sun and moon traveling east and west. What do I know? I only know this—and have no doubt.
