> Song of Innate Knowledge

> The innate knowing is not a knowing that arises from deliberate intellect. Nor is it a knowing that comes from a state of unawareness. Learning to discern the presence of knowing within both existence and non-existence— That is where one must seek directly. If you say it is a form of knowing, then your vision is incomplete. If you cling to non-knowing, that too is a one-sided view. From the interplay of existence and non-existence arise the sixty-two views. To transcend them, realize this before words arise. Realize before words arise; pierce through the mind’s essence. Throughout the day, remain clear and vividly alert. In receiving guests and welcoming visitors, the natural function appears of itself— Why devise countless strategies and schemes? Enter this gateway and find freedom. Your spiritual powers respond across limitless worlds. Vertically and horizontally, your wondrous use knows no bounds; In answering words, you need not distinguish inside and out. When hungry, eat. When tired, sleep. In walking, standing, sitting, lying—just this. When willows are green and flowers red in the third month of spring, The entire world is picked up—vast as this. There are practitioners who stubbornly try to be the master, Only reciting dead phrases before others. They twist and misapply, yet are completely unaware— Foolishly making innate knowing into a rigid rule. There are practitioners who indulge in forceful arguments, Never having dreamt of their original face. Their words are muddled, confusing right and wrong, Merely clinging to forms and expedient means. They do not understand their true nature, are confused about their own mind, And for countless eons have mistaken the consciousness for the spirit. If they were to turn over within the fire, I wonder—would they then recognize the heavenly, the genuine? Recognize the genuine; know transformation and adaptability. Upon entering the gate, immediately demand the public document. Empty the precious mirror to discern dragons from serpents; Raise the sword of wisdom high—its light blaze brilliant. No need to think, no need to calculate. The kite soars, the fish leaps—the Way is one throughout. Innate knowing, innate knowing—who knows this knowing? If you truly know innate knowing, it is worth more than gold.
