> Song of Drowning Girls

> People drown their baby girls for a reason— not because they’re born cruel or heartless. Take the Zhang family, with a daughter beautiful as a goddess. Since childhood, they cherished her like a pearl. When she grew up and married into the Li family, dowry chests followed her step by step, jewels adorning her body. Yet she was discontent, only complaining her dowry was too little. Even her brothers looked at her with resentment. After returning home, she wept day and night. Her parents, uneasy, doubled her jewels and jade. But the extra money ran out, and there wasn’t much left. They sold their fields, sold their land, and even sold their servants— all just to make their daughter’s heart happy. Selling servants, they still feared she wouldn’t be satisfied. When her married home became as rich as Shi Chong, they didn’t realize they had already sold their own house. They fulfilled their daughter’s wishes, but emptied themselves. Their household sipped only the empty wind. Big complaints and small quarrels never ended. They planned to rely on their daughter’s home for old age. But they met cold eyes and cold faces. Even three meals were meager, never quite filling. Reflecting back, they regretted their former misguided love: “After all, it’s our son who is truly family. There’s nothing a father does that isn’t right. Even when a son is angry, he doesn’t truly rage.” Drowning baby girls—still, that fate calls to itself. Heaven should witness this sin of drowning daughters. When the first falls into a pit, later generations should take warning. Yet it leaves those drowned girls with no one to cry out to.
