> Song of the Traveling Anchorite

> Don’t you see—body and mind are like illusions, like lightning; A mayfly in the vast world, a passing guest. Traveling and lodging in this human realm, with nothing to cling to; Clearly knowing this Saha world is not my home. Where I find peace is the palace of the Empty King. The palace of the Empty King— Pick up anything, and every thing is a skillful means. Freely moving, sideways or straight, letting it be as it comes; Seeing, hearing, knowing, and feeling—all are naturally manifest. Sturdy and steady, utterly natural— Good or bad, like or dislike—no need to distinguish. Innate nature itself is beyond all contrivance; The slightest thought, and it cannot be seen. Borne by the power of vows, entrusted with the task, I appear in this world, mingling with the ignorant. With wealth, I give and am not troubled by poverty; When nothing burdens the mind, that itself is fortune. Treating wealth and rank like floating clouds, How could wife and children block the Empty King’s belly? I take afflictions themselves as enlightenment— Who would envy the bliss of the Pure Land? Walking, I chant; tired, I sit; Drunk and full, lazy, I just want to sleep. Too lazy to hang fame or gain on my chest; Even in dreams, I wish to be like Chen Tuan. Bareheaded, hat off—free from suspicion; Barefoot, hair disheveled—no regard for formalities. Sometimes I sneer at the whole world; Sometimes I pat my belly and boast of its greatness. My staff carries the sun and moon across my shoulders; My brows firmly lock the emptiness itself. I grasp heaven and earth and place them in a mustard seed— Upside down or right side up, no method is forbidden. Alas, people of the world—you cannot see through it! You grab tightly at the four elements, trapping yourselves. Open your dream-filled eyes and look closely: Before parents gave birth, who was “I”? If you could turn over in the midst of fire— Try asking: what is it there? I compare heaven and earth to this body— Coming and going, long or short—no fixed truth. Sometimes one dream spans three lifetimes; Sometimes seven days hold a thousand springs. Seeming to exist, seeming not—hazy and vague; Who is born, who dies, who rises, who sinks? Wandering freely through the Triple Realm like a passing guest— In this world, who truly understands?
