> Twenty Hymns of Lingyan Mountain Dwelling

> On the carefree peak of wonderland divine, Not even summer's heat—the dust is frozen fine. Pine and vine drape the jade-green crest in grace, Pagodas and halls pierce clouds, a holy space. Caves and grottoes lead high and low inside, Mountain huts wind along paths, where none may hide. Within this realm, true solitude does rest— Why seek it through painted scrolls upon request?

> Walking slowly beside the western cliff, I pause, leaning on my staff, to gaze. Vast, vast—the waters of Lake Tai, Dim, dim—Dongting Mountain far away. Wind carries the cloud-sails toward the horizon, Mist clears, revealing a tranquil scene. At dusk, atop the pine-clad summit, A hundred herons return with fish in beak.

> My wild nature loves to dwell in mountains, Always longing for streams beside the rocks. Fortunate to live in a peaceful age, I find seclusion before the wondrous peak. Drinking from the Dharma, idly passing days, Resting my spirit, losing track of years. In this quiet solitude, I alone find joy— No merit to benefit gods or men.

> Since coming to live in these mountain hills, Suddenly three or four autumns have passed by. The human world I’ve left behind, untouched; Beyond all things, I chase no worldly ties. My tattered robe I patch as time requires; My daily food I seek when need applies. With nothing extra—just this single self, I sit alone with thoughts that gently rise.

> Everyone says living in the mountains is good, But such a life is not without its challenges. If the heart's desires are not yet settled, How can the inner world find peace? In the heat of summer, there is surely discomfort; In the cold of winter, there is certainly suffering. But if you clearly understand this truth, You can roam freely even beneath the pine trees.

> Once one reaches Cloud Summit, One will not descend from the high peak. Far beyond the dusty world, Deep hidden by green cliffs' side. To benefit beings—now that is done. Lying high, I follow conditions. If asked what power I rely on— The monk's robe itself is a field of blessings.

> Retreating in seclusion, dwelling in mountain caves, Deeply hidden, one thinks this is the way. Worldly ties completely abandoned, What more is there to scheme in human affairs? With a calm mind, the mysterious gate appears; When emotions are empty, this path is unique. Sitting silently in a hermitage, Only facing the white sandalwood incense burner.

> The celestial clock turns through its four seasons— scenes shift as swiftly as a flowing stream. How long can worldly states endure? How many autumns does a human life see? Why not rest by a rocky pine, and pause upon the watery clouds? To spare yourself in the world of red dust the vain toil that leaves snow upon your head.

> On Mount Lingyan, the towering peaks stand steep and grand, Unchanging from past to present, just as they've always been. From north and south, travelers gaze upward in vain— How few have truly climbed to the summit, walking the path within.

> Lingyan's pure vastness leaves worldly noise far behind— A realm so stark and still, no painting could define it. Best of all, within this place lies something worth delight: Ten thousand forms, ever fresh through every season's cycle.

> The sacred traces of Lingyan are wondrous and beyond reach. The Wise One personally came to transform this very place. Do you understand the solitary raised fist? Kashyapa's gentle smile carries the same wind.

> The towering spiritual peak stands unparalleled, No surrounding ridge dares to block its view. White clouds often drift away from here, Becoming rain and canopy across the world.

> The ancient temple of Lingyan rests against the clouds; The path is perilous, and few visitors ever come. Only wandering monks from across the lakes and skies Arrive with their water jugs and staffs to peacefully abide.

> Sitting alone at Lingyan in the depth of night, The fire has grown cold, the ashes are chilled—only I know this. For now, abide in stillness, content with your old lot; Constant, unobstructed light is itself the unconditioned.

> The sacred realm of Lingyan is a wondrous place beyond conceptual thought; Only those who truly understand can recognize its great compassion. Its vast and profound teachings are unfathomable to ordinary minds— Where dragons and snakes mingle together, all meeting at once.

> Lingyan Mountain is no different from Vulture Peak— It's just that people of today fail to see it clearly. If one can truly understand this truth right here, Why go searching specifically for the Western Paradise?

> Lingyan's verses are briefly told, But much remains that can't unfold. If you ask the old hermit what he holds, Countless wondrous lines leave the truth untold.
